Breve descripción:

The Universitat Ramon Llull (URL), based in Barcelona, is a private non-profit university founded on humanistic and Christian ideals and which aims to provide quality higher education that meets the changing needs of society. Using its own methodology that makes full use of the students´ skills, the University prepares the professionals of the future in small teaching groups, encouraging a close working relationship between students and teaching staff, promoting comprehensive training in every field of knowledge, and fostering a mastery of new technologies.

Historia:

The Universitat Ramon Llull, founded on 1 March 1990, is a private non-profit-making providing a public service. Its aim is to provide quality, student-focused education that meets the changing needs of society. The URL is formed by institutions that form part of a long tradition of higher education in Catalonia: the Sarrià Chemical Institute (IQS), the Fundació Blanquerna, the La Salle Engineering and Architecture School, the Faculty of Philosophy, ESADE, the Pere Tarrés University Schools of Social Work and Social Education, The Ebro Observatory, the Vidal i Barraquer University Institute of Mental Health, the Borja Institute of Bioethics, and the ESDi School of Design (affiliated centre). The federal structure of the University gives its various centres the autonomy to express their unique personalities and provides a greater degree of flexibility and adaptability. The educational philosophy of the URL is consistent with the needs of an increasingly dynamic and demanding society. Since the 2005-06 academic year, the grades award for all subjects have been based on the European Credit Transfer and Accumulation (ECTS) system and in accordance with the methodology stemming from the Bologna Declaration, which promotes a university education focused on student learning. In 2006-07 the URL introduced master’s degrees tailored to the requirements of the European Higher Education Area (EHEA), and offers a varied, comprehensive and specialized program every academic year. Since the 2008-09 academic year, the URL has offered eight official EHEA undergraduate degrees. A further 22 official programs were planned for the 2009-10 academic year, and harmonization with the EHEA will conclude in 2010-11 with the implementation of all degree courses brought into line with the new framework.

Docencia:

Teaching at the URL is designed to gives students a number of advantages, including high-quality tuition, personalized attention and small groups. Students can also take up the option of completing a placement at one of over 4,000 companies and institutions, as well as benefitting from the first-rate research carried out at the University and the international projection that comes with full adaptation to the European Higher Education Area and the spirit of the Bologna Declaration. Students can apply for financial assistance from the Ministry of Education and Science through the URL’s Grants Agreement, and the individual University institutions have their own systems of financial aid to students, which can be broken down into the following types: study grants, soft loans, scholarships, preferential loans with financial bodies and discounts on tuition fees for students from low-income families.

Extensión universitaria:

All URL centres have careers offices which put current and former students in touch with companies and institutions to facilitate the organization of placements and successful integration into the labour market after graduation.

Relaciones internacionales:

The URL has information and guidance points to provide students with advice on all areas of university life – access and enrolment processes, academic procedures and timetables, validation of previous studies, grants, social and cultural initiatives, etc – and to offer information on activities organized by the various centres. There are a number of associations for students and alumni, dedicated the the ongoing human, scientific and professional development of their members. The URL has 15 libraries with a collection of 1,200,000 articles and 14,000 journal subscriptions, and provides 1,500 booths for individual study. The libraries provides a range of information and documentation services, and some have specific depository collections of valuable documents. The language services assist the University community with all matters related to language learning and language use (including a correction and linguistic consultancy service). All URL centres have language labs where students can acquire, refresh or perfect their knowledge of Catalan, English and French, and specific materials are available to those wishing to learn Spanish as a foreign language. Students can choose from a variety of audio, video, computer and multimedia resources. The Universitat Ramon Llull encourages its students to take part in volunteering schemes, which involve dedicating part of their free time to public service and charity activities in a range of fields.

Instalaciones y servicios:

URL students and staff are offered the chance to study and work at universities across the world and to complete placements and internships in major companies and institutions.

Rasgos diferenciadores:

The URL has two sports campuses in the Sarrià-Sant Gervasi district of Barcelona, and its Sports Service organizes competitions and leagues between the different centres. Can Caralleu, in the Serra de Collcerola, provides 30 hectares of sports facilities and is an ideal location for various sports activities, competitions and nature activities throughout the year. Participation in university championships is strongly encouraged. Students also have access to the sports facilities of FESS La Salle (fitness room, swimming pool, rockodrome and more), which offers guided activities. The Lesseps university hall of residence in the heart of Barcelona provides accommodation for 100 students and a selection of communal services (canteen, gymnasium, study room, lecture room, etc). Accommodation is also available to visiting teaching and research staff. The URL also has agreements with affiliated university halls of residence and a number of student hostels located close to its main sites. All Ramon Llull centres are equipped with computer rooms and multimedia rooms for workshops, seminars and functions, and other facilities include audiovisual services, a bookshop, a publications service, and cafeteria and bar services. *Important* All URL facilities are adapted for disabled used.
