Short description:

The Universitat Pompeu Fabra (UPF) is a modern university with a commitment to quality and innovation across all of its activities. UPF is renowned for its advanced technological infrastructures, modern facilities and high-level research in the most advanced fields of knowledge and learning.

History:

The Universitat Pompeu Fabra is a leading modern public university that was founded in 1990 to introduce a new model of university in Barcelona and Catalonia. It offers undergraduate programs in social sciences, the humanities, information and communication technologies, health sciences and life sciences, as well as a wide range of master’s and doctoral degrees and specialized postgraduate programs. The UPF occupies various sites in Barcelona, extending from the Parque de la Ciutadella to the new 22@ Technological District of the city, home to the recently opened Communication Campus.

Docencia:

The Pompeu Fabra teaching model is based on teaching plans that reflect the changing academic and professional requirements of society, personalized attention and practical vocational training in companies and institutions. UPF is renowned for the academic calibre of its students and the ease with which graduates find employment after their studies. The UPF has also been quick to adapt its academic structures and curricula to the new student-focused, competence-based learning model proposed by the European Higher Education Area (EHEA). The wide range of new UPF postgraduate programs — 21 official master’s degrees and 10 doctoral programs — enables students to specialize to a high level in any of the areas of knowledge offered at the University. As of the 2009-10 academic year, all of the undergraduate degrees offered at the UPF will be fully adapted to the requirements of the Bologna process, the highest proportion of any public university in Catalonia.

Research:

Research at the UPF is carried out by a core of around 800 highly qualified research fellows (80% of full-time teaching staff have PhDs) and organized through the various University departments and institutes and dedicated research groups and units. Priority research areas cover various disciplines, including social sciences (law, political science, sociology, economics and business studies), health and life sciences (biology and biotechnology, focusing particularly on biomedicine, and public health and bioinformatics), audiovisual communication and information technologies and telecommunications, and the humanities (language and literature, art, history and thought).

University Extension:

The Universitat Pompeu Fabra UPF offers learners over 50 years of age the chance to take part in the UPF Senior lifelong learning programs. The selection of university-level courses offers older learners the chance to update and expand their cultural knowledge and to acquire or improve skills required in today’s information-driven society. UPF Senior is also intended to promote social interaction and the free exchange of knowledge and ideas between members of a generation that was offered fewer opportunities access higher education. Participants are regarded as full UPF students for the duration of their studies: they are given a student card and access to the Global Classroom, may use the UPF library and computer rooms, and are encouraged to play an active part in student life through the wide variety of activities organized by the University Community Assistance Service (choir, music lessons, drama groups, etc.).

International Relations:

Internationalization is one of the strategic priorities of the Universitat Pompeu Fabra. Since its first involvement in international activities in 1992-93, over 5,400 students have taken part in a wide range of exchange and mobility programs, and the UPF is proud to have achieved the highest mobility rate in Spain. Of the 2008-09 graduating class, 32% took up the offer of exchange placements and completed part of their courses at universities in other countries. For the 2009-10 academic year, almost 1000 grants have been announced for exchange and mobility programs with 280 institutions in countries across the world.
