Breve descripción:

Architecture, science and engineering are the areas in which the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya (UPC) carries out its teaching and research. This academic year, at its centres in Barcelona, Castelldefels, Manresa, Sant Cugat del Vallès, Terrassa, Vilanova i la Geltrú and Igualada, the UPC has begun to teach its first undergraduate degrees under the framework of the European Higher Education Area. The courses on offer are complemented by a wide range of postgraduate studies (master’s, doctoral and lifelong learning programs) to satisfy the lifelong training needs of the new professionals in the technological sectors.

Historia:

The Universitat Politècnica de Barcelona was founded in March 1971. Initially, the University comprised the Industrial Engineering Schools of Barcelona and Terrassa, the Architecture School of Barcelona, and several research institutes. In the same year, the Telecommunications Engineering School was opened, followed by the Technical Industrial Engineering University Schools of Terrassa and Vilanova i la Geltrú, the University School of Technical Architecture of Barcelona and the University School of Mining Engineering of Manresa in 1972. In 1974, the Civil Engineering School of Barcelona opened, and in 1976 the Faculty of Computer Science of Barcelona. In Terrassa the University School of Optics was launched, followed two years later by the School of Architecture of the Vallès, which moved to St San Cugat del Vallès, in 1991. As the University now had schools and faculties throughout the region, it changed its name to Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya (UPC) in 1984. In 1990, the School of Nautical Studies became part of the University and its name was changed to the Faculty of Nautical Studies of Barcelona. The following year saw the launch of the University Technical School of the Baix Llobregat, and in 1992 the Faculty of Mathematics and Statistics of Barcelona was created. More recently, the Industrial School in c./Urgell, the University School of Agricultural Engineering in Barcelona and the University School of Industrial Engineering in Igualada also joined the UPC, as did the School of Photography in 1994 and the School of Multimedia in 1997, which are now part of the Image and Multimedia Technology Centre. The year 2003 saw the opening of the Interdisciplinary Training Centre which offers scientific and technical courses for high-performing students from all over Spain.

Docencia:

The UPC offers teaching of excellence based on innovation, interdisciplinarity and internationalization, with around 60 official degrees and a wide range of a postgraduate studies (master’s, doctorates and lifelong training courses). It offers multidisciplinary studies, with dual degrees aimed at high-performing students, and academic itineraries adapted to the requirements both of the traditional and emerging productive sectors and of the EHEA. For the UPC, the process of adapting its courses to the requirements of the European Higher Education Area is not a simple renewal of the degree structure but an opportunity to introduce a dynamic, motivating learning model for both students and teaching staff. In the postgraduate area the University offers 58 master’s programs – seven Erasmus Mundus, and 16 which are taught entirely in English – and 43 doctoral programs. The UPC is the Spanish technological university with the most doctors and the most international doctoral and master’s students. This academic year, the UPC’s School of Professional & Executive Development offers more than 50 master’s and lifelong learning programs fostering professional development in the University’s areas of knowledge, taught by UPC academic and research staff and by experts from the professional world.

Investigación:

The UPC has earned an excellent reputation for its basic and applied research. Its strong involvement in technology and knowledge transfer to firms and to society in general has established it as a key driver of innovation, research, and technological development, in fact, the University repays the trust placed in it by providing society with a handsome return on its investment. The UPC works hand in hand with top ranking institutions and companies in Spain and abroad on innovation projects, promoting the development of specialized technology parks and participating in numerous scientific organizations. More than 80 research units work in close cooperation with 2,500 Spanish and foreign institutions on innovation projects linked both to traditional productive sectors and also to emerging sectors such as aeronautics, photonics, supercomputing, bioengineering, energy, and the environment. The University has also created fifteen new technology-based companies. The close cooperation between the University and its partners in the business world has had a decisive influence on the country’s technological development. Currently, the UPC is working on more than 8,000 research projects together with the productive sectors. This cooperation takes the form of preparing new professionals for the labour market and also technology transfer to meet the new technological and industrial challenges. More than 4,000 companies and institutions work in association with the University, providing resources for programs of academic excellence, sustainability and equality of opportunity, and cooperating in research projects and educational programs by offering in-company placements to students.

Extensión universitaria:

This academic year, the UPC has launched a new teaching project at the Terrassa Campus called the UPC Diploma in Science, Technology and Society, in cooperation with other universities and institutions. On this course, 46 students over the age of 55 learn the keys to the world of twenty-first century under the guidance of 25 lecturers. In the area of the public communication of science, the UPC’s centres organize activities, lectures and courses throughout the academic year for the general public and also for primary and secondary school pupils. In addition, the UPC publishes an electronic general interest science journal publication Enclau upc (www.upc.edu/enclauupc). It has also launched the TV channel UPC.tv, which is part of its project for the renovation of its communication interface. The new channel shows non-specialist science programs, introduces the University’s teaching centres, and publicizes the research carried out by its young researchers and the results produced by the university community. The UPC’s centres also organize university outreach activities under the auspices of the Joan Lluís Vives Institute, which brings together all the summer courses and programs offered by the Catalan-speaking universities.

Relaciones internacionales:

The UPC is a member of several international networks and has signed more than 275 agreements with foreign universities. It also organizes 82 international dual degree programs. To strengthen its international involvement, the UPC constantly promotes its relations with other universities both at home and abroad. It supports domestic and international research projects, encourages mobility among students and teaching staff (each year, more than UPC 2,300 students complete their training at foreign universities) and is represented in the main international university networks such as CLUSTER, CESAER, and CINDA. The UPC also coordinates five UNESCO chairs that promote research and teaching at international level in higher education, numerical methods, technology and the humanities, sustainable development and visual health.
