Short description:

The Universitat Jaume I de Castellón (UJI) is a public higher education and research institution, set up in 1991, which aims to support the social, economic and cultural development of its surrounding area through the creation and transfer of knowledge. The UJI currently awards 30 degrees and has a student population of around 13,000, making it possible to provide personalized attention and keep teaching groups relatively small. The modern, carefully designed campus fosters a sense of community and is easy to reach from the city of Castellón and other local towns. The UJI also operates sites in a number of towns in the province of Castellón: Castellón de la Plana, Morella, Segorbe and Vinaroz

History:

The creation of the Universitat Jaume I was a response to unanimous public support for the idea, and the University has remained very much a public endeavour ever since. On 27 February 1991 the Valencian parliament approved the foundation of the UJI, marking the beginning of a new period in the history of Castellón. Education in the city and the surrounding area has its roots in the Teacher Training studies at the old University College of Castelló, set up in 1969, but the greatest step forward came with the creation of the UJI, which originally had 4,847 students, 345 faculty members and an administrative and services staff of only 210. The original academic structure consisted of 16 degrees, ten of which were introduced by the University and six inherited from the Universitat de València, taught by three centres: the Faculty of Human and Social Sciences, the Faculty of Legal and Economic Sciences and the School of Technology and Experimental Sciences. Sixteen years after it was founded, the Universitat Jaume I is now a mature and consolidated institution, offering 30 degree programs, providing tuition to 13,000 students, and employing 1,120 faculty members and 590 members of administrative and service staff. Over its relatively short history, the UJI has taught more than 16,000 graduates and produced over 2,000 research projects and contracts.

Docencia:

The Universitat Jaume I teaches new, flexible and competitive curricula and programmes of study in which all students are expected to complete placements and internships in companies and institutions. According to recent studies, one of every four trainee students is eventually hired by the company in which their internship is carried out, and 93% of UJI graduates currently in paid employment. The “UJI style” places a strong emphasis on practical, multi-disciplinary training and all-round learning, and all UJI students study a foreign language and take courses related to new technologies and European citizenship.

Research:

The Universitat Jaume I is a pioneering institution in the use of new information and communication technologies, and firmly believes that communication and creativity will be the cornerstones of future social and economic development. UJI was the first Spanish institution to have a public website (www.uji.es) and the first university to open an Centre for Education and New Technologies (CENT), oversees research and advisory work concerning the application of new technologies to enhance teaching quality. With this aim in mind, UJI was the first university in Spain to incorporate audiovisual equipment and computers with Internet connections into the teacher’s desks of all its lecture rooms. In addition, the Universitat Jaume I is equipped with modern laboratories for teaching and research in the field of audiovisual technology, and photography, video and television, radio and graphic arts studios. The UJI attaches great importance to research and development, and is aware of its impact on teaching quality and its role in strengthening the interaction between university and society. It is also one of the leading universities in Spain in the procurement of external funding for R&D per faculty member. The Universitat Jaume I is a keen promoter of industrial innovation and R&D and is the driving force behind the creation of the Xarxa de Serveis, a package of scientific and technological services for local companies. The UJI also houses the Agustín Escardino Ceramics Technology Institute (ITC), a world leader in technological research and development for the tile industry.

University Extension:

The UJI is a dynamic and enterprising institution that strives to maintain close ties with the local community. Quality management policies across all areas of university activity and a carefully managed corporate image and communication policy reflect the UJI’s institutional concern for quality and transparent management and underpin its commitment to the development of the region. Through the Campus Obert (Open Campus) program, UJI has set up sites in towns outside Castellón to increase its contact with the socio-economic reality of its wider are of influence. The university extension program promotes lifelong learning and the dissemination of culture outside the UJI centres, and has a particularly strong impact in rural areas. In addition, the UJI Alumni and Friends Society (SAUJI), which has over 3,800 members, maintains the bond between the University and society. The Universitat Jaume I is an active member of various university networks, including Universia, Grupo Compostela and the CRUE, and is also proud to be the administrative home of the Vives University Network, an association of universities that strengthens the ties among the universities of Catalonia, Valencian Community, Balearic Islands, southern France and Andorra.
