Breve descripción:

The Universitat de València (UV) presents an enormous variety in terms of the diversity of degrees at all levels, its participation in research networks, its faculties, schools and administrative units, and its relations with society. With its centuries of history, its experience and its vision for the future, the UV is an essential part of the cultural heritage of Valencian society. Founded in 1499, the Estudi General de València was initially devoted to the study of medicine, the humanities, theology and law. Now the UV is a modern European university, open to practically all branches of knowledge, research, and culture.

Historia:

At the start of the fifteenth century, the studies taught by the city and the church were brought together by the city authorities, but they separated again in 1416. The foundation of the University of Valencia had to wait until 30 April 1499, when, by order of the City Council of Valencia, its Constitution was written. With the Bull issued by Pope Alexander VI in 1501 and the royal privilege issued by Fernando II in 1502, the Estudi General de Valencia was officially inaugurated and was granted the same prerogatives and distinctions as the universities of Rome, Bologna, Salamanca and Lleida, on 13 October 1502.

Docencia:

The UV offers a wide range of degrees at undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral level – the widest, in fact, in the Valencian Community. The University has three campuses and teaches in six areas of knowledge. It offers more than 60 official undergraduate degrees and a hundred master’s programs (counting its own and the official degrees) as well as postgraduate and specialization diplomas and more than a hundred doctoral courses, a third of which have been awarded the Ministry of Education’s mención de calidad in recognition of their quality. La Nau Gran gives classes for the older members of society who wish to keep in touch with the world of the university and learning. Humanities and engineering, social and health sciences, law and teacher training make up a body of disciplines that brings together scientific and technical knowledge and creates an ideal atmosphere for specialized learning.

Investigación:

The UV is a pioneer in the dissemination of science. The University assigns nearly 60m euros to the research carried out by its 92 departments, 17 research institutes, and its interdisciplinary research structures. The UV is the third-ranking Spanish university in terms of income for research, and the first in the Valencian Community. It carries out R+D in the basic and experimental sciences, engineering, health sciences, social sciences, education and humanities, and has over a thousand R+D projects, a thousand research contracts and agreements, and almost 600 grants for trainee researchers.

Extensión universitaria:

The University Extramural Service is the link between the UV and the rest of society. It promotes and organizes activities to disseminate knowledge, science, and culture. Inside this framework, which is defined in the University Statutes, the Service offers a variety of programs and courses with the cooperation of public and private bodies. Proposals for programs may be made by the departments, centres, institutes and services of the UV or by its associates. The Service currently organizes the extramural programs Universitat als pobles, which runs courses in towns in other parts of the Valencian Community, and La Nau Gran, for older members of the public.

Relaciones internacionales:

The International Relations Office manages the UV’s exchange programs with universities in Spain and abroad and its involvement in international cooperation and development. The Office promotes the participation of the university community in exchange programs, welcomes visiting students, and helps UV students to process their applications to study in another university.

Rasgos diferenciadores:

The University is a leader in research. Its numerous research teams generate a constant flow of new knowledge, both basic and applied, which is transferred to society by the UV’s institutes, laboratories and departments. In the near future the Science Park will provide an added impetus for this process. And at the University’s extensive bibliographical and electronic resources provide essential support for its more than 45,000 students. The University is committed to promoting culture and cultural heritage. In addition to study and research, it provides facilities and resources that encourage the development of all aspects of university life: halls of residence, sports facilities, libraries, associations and volunteer networks. It also has places of exceptional beauty such as the Botanical Garden and the building in Carrer de la Nau. In recent years the University has awarded honorary doctorates to many renowned researchers, including Severo Ochoa, Amartya Sen and Muhammad Yunus. Over the years the UV has been home to many leading scientists, among them the Spanish Nobel Prizewinner Santiago Ramón y Cajal. http://www.uv.es - servei.estudiants@uv.es
