The goal of the Universitat Abat Oliba CEU, just as it was that of the very first university to be established as an institution of learning, is to seek the truth and to communicate it in all disciplines known to man. This mission is captured in its motto: Viam sapientiae monstrabo (Proverbs 4, 11), I will show you the way of wisdom. It is by fulfilling this goal that the University can be an efficient tool of cultural progress for its students and broader society as well. The University was founded as a universitas magistrorum et scholarium, that is, as an academic community dedicated to research and the teaching of students, who willingly joined with their teachers in the mutual pursuit of knowledge. It is in this spirit of cooperation and respect that the University seeks to promote among its academic teaching staff and students alike a harmonious integration of faith and culture, of Christian wisdom and specialized professional training.
The origins of the Universitat Abat Oliba CEU can be traced back to the University Centre of Education set up by the San Pablo-CEU Foundation in 1973 following an agreement to cooperate with the University of Barcelona. The first lectures were given in Avda Pearson in Barcelona in 1974 and since then more than 8,500 students have graduated from the University. In 1993, the University took up residence on the Bellesguard Campus, as the Abat Oliba Higher Education Centre, and where it now teaches all its degree courses in Law and Business Management, as well as the first-cycle courses in the Economics degree. Ten years later, on 4 July 2003, the Catalan Parliament (Act 20) granted the institution university status, establishing two centres in Barcelona: the Social Sciences Faculty and the School of Engineering.
Based on the model in practice at universities in the US and the UK, the Campus of Bellesguard is designed to accommodate up to two thousand students in small subject groups with individual tutorial supervision. Students receive highly personalised teaching and so are guaranteed quality in all the services provided by the University. The knowledge and information society in which we live today requires its centres of tertiary education the last rung on the academic ladder before entering the professional world to be aligned with the challenges that the world faces in the twenty-first century. To achieve this, the University offers its students innovative teaching practices, which break with traditional models. The University seeks above all to provide its students with the skills and resources to face the constant changes in todays world. Student learning takes place in lecture theatres and practical classes, seminars, tutorials and complementary academic activities, where the aim is to combine theory and practice through case study methods and the individual monitoring of student progress.
Research work at the Universitat Abat Oliba CEU is organized in the university departments, specialist research groups and associated centres. Specialist research groups. The University has created its own research structure by establishing specialist and interdisciplinary groups (cátedras especializadas), with the aim that they can also contribute to the postgraduate courses. The Reading Club proposes a title for its group members to read and discuss. Then, working very much as a team, the clubs members write reviews for publication in the Universitys online cultural magazine, Letras de Batalla.
The University attaches great importance to giving its students the possibility of completing part of their studies abroad. The University organizes an International Exchange Program that coordinates exchange programs with prestigious centres of higher education. The Dual Degree program. The curricula for the dual degree programs are specially designed to ensure that the course contents complement each other as closely as possible and so facilitate the studies of those students simultaneously enrolled on two degree courses. In practice, it takes a student five academic years to graduate in both degrees. The student is able to specialize by selecting a range of optional subjects and on successfully completing these courses can be awarded a second degree. The 2009-2010 academic year is the last year that the dual degree program is available, as in 2010-2011 all university qualifications will have to be adapted to the requirements of the European Higher Education Area (the bachelors and masters degrees). International Programs. Second-cycle students (those entering the third year) are encouraged to participate on international student exchange programs with prestigious centres of higher education in the United States that include the University of Saint Thomas in Houston, the Regent University School of Law in Virginia and the College of Charleston in South Carolina. New exchange programs are also offered under an agreement with the University of Technology in Sydney and as part of the CEU-BU bilingual program with Boston University. Students are also encouraged to finance themselves on summer programs in British and North American universities. Scholarships are awarded to the most outstanding students so that they can participate, for example, on the University Summer Session at the University of Notre Dame, in Indiana. Compulsory Work Placement (Practicum). All the Universitys degree courses require students to complete work placements in a private firm or public institution. These training programs should run from between 250 to 500 hours depending on the course. The student is assigned a tutor whose job it is to oversee the practicum and to ensure that the student gets as much benefit from it as possible and acquires the appropriate skills and professional expertise. In addition to this program, the Universitys job placement and careers service gives students the chance of participating on voluntary placement schemes at home and abroad, working during the university holiday periods and using their online job centre. Student Grant Program. Each year the University offers a broad program of study grants: to students with outstanding academic results, to families with three or more children, to the Universitys alumni (or children of former students), while assistance is also available to those students with particular financial needs. http://www.uao.es - info@uao.es
