The Universidad Miguel Hernández de Elche (UMH) is a modern, publicly-funded European university. It seeks to serve society by providing teaching, research and services of excellence, while encouraging the professional development of all members of its university community. Its goal is to achieve the social, economic and technological development of our society and the all-round development of its students to ensure they are able to fulfil their roles successfully in the labour market.
The Universidad Miguel Hernández de Elche was founded in December 1996 by the Valencian Parliament and it began its academic activity the following year. The UMH has four campuses in Elche, Altea, Sant Joan dAlacant and Orihuela respectively. The Rectors Office and the University´s Central Services, four teaching centres, three research institutes and nine departments are located in the city of Elche. The UMH campus devoted to Health Sciences is situated in Sant Joan d´Alacant, alongside the university hospital. The campus is home to two faculties, two research institutes and six departments. The UMH has a campus in Altea devoted entirely to the arts, while in Orihuela there are a further two teaching centres and five departments split between its Desamparados and Salesas sites. In recent years the number of degree courses on offer at the UMH has increased two-fold, rising from sixteen to thirty three. This growth represents the efforts of all members of the university community, and has meant the introduction of courses more closely aligned to the needs of the labour market and society in general.
The UMH, with its 1,000-strong academic teaching staff, provides education of excellence in 33 officially-recognised degrees and 17 officially-recognised masters and PhDs. Students can choose courses from the fields of the arts, the experimental sciences and technology, the health sciences and the social sciences at one of its four campuses in Elche, Altea, Sant Joan d´Alacant and Orihuela. At the UMH, the academic staff work closely with students, playing an important role in their training, and transmitting their professional knowledge and expertise to ensure their all-round development. In this task, students are encouraged to develop their professional skills, and to take part in work placements and exchange programs at home and abroad. The UMH offers a wide range of postgraduate degrees, masters, specialisation courses, post-doctoral studies and lifelong learning courses (AUNEX university courses for the over 55s, summer courses, bespoke training schemes for businesses and other institutions, etc.) designed in conjunction with experts in the economic development of the province and, therefore, geared to providing the skills valued most highly by local firms.
Supporting and promoting research is a constant concern in the UMHs strategic plan. To this end it operates twenty research departments and five research institutes. The UMH boasts considerable research potential as revealed by the quantity and quality of the scientific output of its academic teaching staff and researchers, and by the growth in both its commissioned and competitive research. In recent years there has been a marked increase in funding from the European Commission, which is a testimony to the research excellence of the University. Indeed, according to the research productivity ranking published by the Universidad de Granada, the UMH ranks fifth among all Spains public universities. The UMH also provides the technical resources and services that local firms need to enhance their industrial innovation, thereby strengthening the Universitys position in the local business community.
The UMH organizes a full range of cultural, sporting and leisure activities for its students and the wider community. Among the excellent cultural activities programmed by the UMH, highlights include theatre, debates, literature and music workshops, the performances given by the University choir, film seasons, exhibitions, concerts and other leisure activities. The UMH also runs summer courses each year at a variety of locations throughout the province. The UMH organizes many sports activities in its efforts to encourage students to be physically active. Students and all university members can take part in university competitions, training courses and various sporting events run by the University. Among other facilities, UMH currently boasts a golf course and two paddle tennis courts, and in September 2009 work finished on the Elche Sports and High Performance Sports Centres, the result of an agreement signed between UMH and Elche Town Hall.
The UMH has signed many agreements, with institutions at home and abroad, to encourage the mobility of its students. UMH students, therefore, enjoy the possibility of completing their studies at other Spanish universities or at universities throughout Europe, the US or South America. Currently, more than 500 students are participating on mobility projects managed by the UMH. The Vice-Rector for International Relations has opened an international services office aimed at boosting participation on international projects and creating a favourable environment for cooperation between foreign universities and the UMH. The UMH seeks to raise the social awareness of its students so as to improve their quality of life and to encourage them to take an active role in improving society. To this end, the University has taken various initiatives, including the training of volunteers in areas, such as, development, ecology and environment, health, etc. The UMH is engaged in a broad-based cooperation program in Rwanda, setting up a hospital and school.
