Short description:

The Universidade da Coruña is a public university with 24,055 students, 1,435 teaching and research staff, and 846 administration and service staff. Although the University has traditionally focused on technological disciplines, degree courses are imparted in all areas of knowledge, some of which are unique in the Galician university system, such as Architecture or Civil Engineering. The 2009-10 academic year has seen the introduction of 26 degree programs fully adapted to the European Higher Education Area (EHEA) and 41 official master’s degrees.

History:

The Universidade da Coruña (UDC) was founded in 1989 and has twenty-two faculties and schools and three affiliated centres located on its campuses in A Coruña and Ferrol, where 46 official degree programs are taught to undergraduates and postgraduates. The UDC’s mission is to promote social well-being through social, scientific and technological advance. As part of this commitment, the Universidade da Coruña operates a series of specific institutions that work with the governing bodies to ensure the successful implementation of its ambitious social aims.

Docencia:

The Universidade da Coruña has a total of 1,473 teaching staff who are responsible for imparting the 46 undergraduate postgraduate degree programs on offer.

Research:

Research at the Universidade da Coruña is key to teaching quality and the competitiveness of the institution as a whole, and forms part of the University’s commitment to producing tangible benefits for the society in which it is based. Over 1,200 research fellows contribute to this effort, and complement the work of the top-class researchers based in the UDC’s network of laboratories, research institutes and the Central Research Services building

University Extension:

The University Extension Service enriches the university experience for UDC students by organizing courses, lectures, and a wide range of cultural, recreational and sports activities, and opens the institution’s doors to the surrounding community through various specially designed activities. The service also devotes special attention to the protection, development and dissemination of Galician culture through promoting specific activities and providing support to other institutions working towards the same goal.

International Relations:

The International Relations Office oversees the participation of the UDC in projects and initiatives in Europe, Latin America and the rest of the world, providing information to students and staff on existing programs and monitoring the different international agreements to which the University is a signatory. The Office of the Vice-Rector for International Relations encourages members of the University community to take part in international activities, such as student and faculty exchange programs and development cooperation schemes within the framework of wider inter-university agreements, providing a quality service through which any student, faculty member or member of the administration and services staff can obtain information on and support for international activities.

Facilities and services:

The Universidade da Coruña has two campuses, one in the city of A Coruña and the other in Ferrol. The two sites house the UDC’s twenty-two faculties and schools and three affiliated centres, where 46 official degree programs are taught to undergraduates and postgraduates. The UDC is also committed to serving the wider community, and runs technology park and various services including the Environment Office, the Office for Gender, the Research Ethics Committee, the Diversity Office and the Cooperation and Voluntary Work Office.

Distinguishing features:

Since it was founded in 1989, the Universidade da Coruña has been firmly committed to providing its students with a comprehensive, high-quality education, and the above-average percentage of graduates who would return to study at the University suggests that this aim has been achieved. The UDC also strives to prepare its students for professional life and supports a range of events designed to facilitate their integration into the labour market, including the European Employment Fair. The above-average employment statistics for UDC graduates are a testament to the University’s work in this area.
