Short description:
The Universidad CEU San Pablo is one of the three private universities managed by the San Pablo CEU University Foundation. Inheriting the tradition of the teachings of the CEU association founded 75 years before, the University opened its doors in 1993. Its distinguishing features are its commitment to Christian humanism and to academic excellence, research, technological innovation and internationalization, and its mission is to provide professional training of excellence and to produce highly-skilled graduates. The University offers a wide range of undergraduate and postgraduate courses, along with official masters degrees, PhDs and its own qualifications in all branches of knowledge, at five faculties (Medicine, Law, Economics, Humanities and Communication, and Pharmacy) and a technical school. The University has around 900 faculty members and provides study grants and financial assistance. Through an agreement with Grupo Hospital Madrid, the CEU University Hospital has been set up, the University has research and language laboratories, and its strong commitment to internationalization is reflected by its bilingual degree courses and international agreements.
History:
The University is part of the San Pablo CEU University Foundation, a non-profit educational institution set up in Madrid in 1933. In its early days, the CEU had only a few law students and only six chairs. It grew quickly with the opening of new schools in Madrid, Barcelona, Valencia, Murcia, Elche, Seville and Valladolid, and over the years the CEU has taught many students who have excelled in all fields of public activity. Today the University has private university status, and was recognized by law in 1993. Its legal framework is constituted by article 27.6 of the Spanish Constitution, the 1983 University Reform Act and the Royal Decree of 25 August 1991, which laid down the provisions for the establishment and recognition of new universities. The Official State Gazette of 8 February 1994 published the Royal Decree authorizing the constitution of the University and the commencement of its courses, as well as the official recognition and approval of its study programs. The University was officially inaugurated by their Majesties the King and Queen of Spain on 22 February 1994.
Docencia:
Universidad CEU San Pablo undertakes to provide its students with a sound Christian-inspired education, fostering in them the commitment to the building of a fairer and more fraternal society. It has the deepest respect for the freedom of personal conscience, both inside and outside the university environment. The University strives to create a spiritual climate that encourages the human and religious development of all its members. Its teaching programs include essential vocational training in its broadest context, placing special emphasis on ethical, cultural, aesthetic and social aspects. Rather than simply transferring knowledge, its courses seek to develop skills in identifying, posing and solving problems and to encourage critical thinking. The University enhances its students capacity for individual study by promoting active participation in their own education, backed up by intensive personal tutoring. The University must foresee the changes in social demand for professionals or particular areas of training, and adapt its programs and degree courses to the new requirements. The University is open to everyone with sufficient capacity and, as far as possible, provides financial assistance for those needing it.
Research:
The main aim of the Universidad CEU San Pablo is the search for truth. Its critical but constructive spirit guarantees the academic rigour of its research programs. In its research, the University attaches particular importance to the integration of knowledge, the dialogue between faith and reason, and the ethical implications of new scientific approaches and discoveries. Its research programs also pay special attention to the study of new methods and techniques that can introduce innovations and improvements into teaching. The University places its critical spirit, its knowledge, and its research capacity at the disposal of firms and institutions in both private and public sectors through cooperation and exchange agreements with no restrictions based on borders or beliefs. Currently, the University has 72 active research projects, nine patents awarded, and seven patents applied for.
University Extension:
Practical Training and Employment Through the strategic alliances and agreements it has made with over 2,000 institutions and companies in a variety of sectors, the Universidad CEU San Pablo is able to include practical vocational training in the syllabuses of all its degree courses. To provide the best possible preparation for a professional career either in Spain or abroad, the University organizes an in-company placement program in which students may gain practical experience and thus apply the skills that they have learnt as part of their studies. The Careers Guidance Service matches the job vacancies received with the profiles of graduates. It also runs regular workshops on job opportunities, courses for finding work, business workshops and employment forums, where the countrys leading companies, law firms and institutions describe their recruitment techniques, what they have to offer, and the profiles in the highest demand.
International Relations:
Universidad CEU San Pablo has made internationalization one of its main strategic policies in order to offer its students an education of excellence to prepare them for the challenges of their future working life. Bilingual Programs: The University includes bilingual programs in various degree courses aimed at students with a good knowledge of English. All these programs include a wide range of subjects taught by faculty members from the University itself and from foreign universities, and they provide students with the international experience that comes from attending and studying at a foreign university. International Mobility Project: Not only undergraduates, postgraduates and doctorate students, but also academic and administrative and services staff may undertake international mobility placements at over 100 universities, mostly through the European Commissions Erasmus program. International Internships: Students may apply for a place on the international internship program - the ideal complement to their degree studies and a valuable personal experience. Summer School: The summer school organizes courses in various branches of science, culture, law and economics, within an international context, aimed at both university students and professional people. The courses are given in Spanish and English and have a strong practical bias. They are taught both at the Universidad CEU San Pablo in Madrid and abroad. European Diploma Supplement: The University offers its students the chance to apply for the European Diploma Supplement.
