The Universidad San Jorge (USJ) is a non-profit institution founded to promote the principles of Christian humanism. Its primary mission is to educate students as individuals and as future professionals so that they can take up leading roles in society. The University aims to train highly skilled graduates with the abilities to adapt to the demands of the rapidly changing workplace so that not only are they equipped to respond to the needs of the firm, but that they can also forge new paths in their professional field and within society. The USJ provides each student with carefully tailored tuition which responds to the new needs of the European Higher Education Area and the globalized world. To this end, all its bachelors degrees have been fully adapted to meet the requirements of the Bologna agreement.
On 24 February 2005 the Aragon Parliament formally created the Universidad San Jorge, and with the support of the San Valero Foundation it accepted students onto degree courses in Advertising and Public Relations, Journalism and Computer Engineering. On 24 May 2006 building began on the University Campus of Villanueva de Gállego which opened in the 2007-2008 academic year with the inauguration of the Faculty of Communication Sciences and the Rectorate Building. Today, the University teaches six bachelors degrees that have been designed in strict accordance with the directives of the European Higher Education Area. Its postgraduate courses include two PhD programs, three official masters and a number of other postgraduate degrees. The 2008-2009 academic year saw the incorporation of three new bachelors degrees in Audiovisual Communication, Translation and Intercultural Communication, and Pharmacy. The year was also notable for the celebration of the first graduate degree ceremony in Aragon for students in journalism, advertising and public relations. In just four years, the university community has grown to include 1000 students, more than 100 academic teaching staff, researchers and management personnel and almost 200 associate staff.
Bachelors Degree Courses The University aims to respond to the present needs of the university student, offering carefully tailored tuition and programs that reflect the principles set out in the European Higher Education Area. The academic teaching staff are more than mere providers of information, and encourage students to reflect analytically and creatively and to develop good learning skills. While at the University, all students are assigned a tutor, whose job it is to oversee the students personal, academic and professional development. On arrival, the tutor helps the students adapt to university life. During their studies, the tutor advises students regarding the best options to take within their degree program, and encourages them to get involved in activities outside the lecture theatre (congresses and seminars), to find relevant job placements, and to apply for student exchange programs with other universities. On graduating, the tutor helps students adapt to the workplace and makes them aware of opportunities for continuous learning. In this way the tutor plays a role in the students personal and professional development. Postgraduate Courses A range of teaching methods are used in the postgraduate programs to ensure students receive a rigorous academic training. Lectures. Outlining the theory and fundamental concepts of the course material. Case Studies. Analysis of real cases, discussion and problem solving. Structured and unstructured discussions on key issues. Student presentations of research work carried out. Seminars chaired by students. Problem solving and practical tasks completed individually or in teams.

The USJ is not solely concerned with teaching but plays a leading role in the wider community. It organizes a range of activities for many sectors of society, including children and local secondary school pupils, aimed at fostering solidarity and team work. One of its main concerns is the organization of sports activities to encourage students to adopt healthy life styles and a range of other values such as the social skills that can improve the academic atmosphere on its campuses. The USJ is an active participant in Spains University championships and regularly organizes football matches, paddle tennis competitions and volleyball games. The University also runs a full summer course program, an English theatre group, cycles of conferences, and invites guest speakers to talk at its Villanueva Campus and at the Walqa Technology Park. Finally, students can improve their language skills at the Institute of Modern Languages.
One of the Universitys founding principles is to bring students, academic teaching staff and researchers together to share their knowledge and so enrich university life. To encourage this, the USJs International Relations Department is responsible for student exchange programs around the world and acts as an information point for students in other countries wishing to study at the University. In just three years the USJ has signed more than 70 cooperation agreements with universities in Africa, America, Asia and Europe to establish exchange programs for its students, academic teaching staff and management. These agreements seek to draw on the best of the participants teaching and research and ensure that students can develop their personal academic interests in other settings.

The Universidad San Jorge has doubled in size in the last year and now offers six bachelors degrees fully adapted to the European Higher Education Area. This process of adaptation has meant the implementation of teaching methods that respond directly to the needs of the university student. The Universitys academic teaching staff are more than mere providers of information, and encourage students to reflect analytically and creatively and to develop good learning skills. While at the University, all students are assigned a tutor, whose job it is to oversee the students personal, academic and professional development. On graduating, the tutor helps students adapt to the workplace and makes them aware of opportunities for continuous learning. Together with its innovative teaching methods, the University has established a reputation for its degree programs in the field of communication and the Faculty of Communication Sciences is ranked among the top five in Spain. The Faculty of Health Sciences is the only university centre in Aragon that offers a bachelors degree in Pharmacy and the first in all Spain to incorporate the latest educational initiatives in the field as proposed by the World Health Organization and the International Pharmaceutical Federation. The Faculty stresses the importance of students acquiring direct experience within the profession and so from their first year of study students take part in job placement programs. Finally, the School of Engineering brings students into direct contact with firms operating in the high-tech sector thanks to its location in the Walqa Technology Park. In addition to benefiting from this professional environment, the engineering students study the second cycle of this bachelors degree entirely in English which means graduates are much sought after in firms both at home and abroad. http://www.usj.es - info@usj.es
