The Universidad Rey Juan Carlos, the most modern of the six public universities in the Autonomous Community of Madrid, provides teaching for some 25,000 students on four different campuses. The Faculty of Communication Sciences, the University School of Tourism and the Technical School of Telecommunications Engineering are located in Fuenlabrada, the Faculty of Health Sciences is situated in Alcorcón, the Graduate School of Experimental Sciences and Technology and the School of Computer Engineering are in Móstoles, and the Faculty of Legal and Social Sciences is in the Madrid district of Vicálvaro. The Universitys commitment to teaching and research excellence and its collaboration with industry and business, combined with superb facilities and a marked international profile make the URJC a point of reference among Spains universities as they face the challenges of the 21st century.
The URJC was established in 1996 upon the initiative of the Governing Council of the Autonomous Community of Madrid and enjoyed the unanimous support of all political groups sitting in the Assembly. The aim was to satisfy the growing demand for university places in the region, while at the same time promoting competition among the existing universities
The URJC is fully committed to undertaking academic research as is evidenced by its own initiative to offer incentives to increase scientific output. The Centre for Innovation, Technology and Knowledge Transfer (CINTTEC) has been commissioned to manage and further technological development at the University, encouraging the transfer of science and technology to industry, while the Technology Support Centre (CAT) makes its facilities available to academic teaching staff, researchers and local firms.
The URJC organizes a wide range of activities for the university community. These include events in its modern sports facilities, theatre groups, music, a film forum and various competitions in the arts. The URJC also runs a three-year course for those over the age of 55 who wish to keep studying at the University. In July the URJC Foundation holds its summer courses in Aranjuez.
The URJC is fully committed to strengthening its international profile as illustrated by the large number of agreements it has signed with international universities. These enable students and academic teaching staff alike to take part in exchange programs.
Thanks to its recent foundation, the URJC can boast unbeatable facilities commensurate with the degree programs it provides. It has brand new libraries in all its faculties and schools as well as a wireless network on its four campuses, which are well equipped with computer facilities. Other installations include the Health Sciences Clinic, television and radio studios, multimedia and editing suites in the Faculty of Communication Sciences. The Universitys Graduate School of Experimental Sciences and Technology is home to the Technology Support Centre equipped with cutting edge installations. Finally, all four campuses have sports facilities: the Raúl González Blanco athletics stadium, tennis courts and football pitches, and much more.
The URJCs recent foundation ensures that it is a modern, dynamic and flexible university that is able to adapt quickly to new social demands. Aware that the professional job market requires students with ever better qualifications, the University teaches joint, bilingual and online degrees - an offer that sets its apart from other universities. It also runs a large number of masters programs and URJC-specific degrees in very popular subjects. All these qualities and facilities are offered at a University that is fully adapted to people with disabilities, and one that has a strong commitment to society and protecting the environment.
