Short description:

The Universidad Pública de Navarra is a modern, welcoming institution with clear international leanings. It provides teaching and research of the highest quality and offers wide range of services. The strategic priorities of the University are to provide students with solid, comprehensive education, to promote research as a fundamental activity across all disciplines, and to constantly improve the services that support its quality teaching and research.

History:

The Universidad Pública de Navarra was set up by the Parliament of Navarre in April 1987 to bring together the various degree courses offered by a range of public-sector institutions up to that point, some of which had existed since the mid-19th century. In 1989-90 the University opened the doors of its Pamplona campus, a 25-hectare site in Arrosadía created from designs by the award-winning architect Francisco Javier Sáenz de Oiza. In 2002, the Parliament of Navarre passed a regional act governing the teaching of university courses in Tudela, and in October 2004 the University began its inaugural postgraduate program in the city, the Master in Senior Food Processing Company Management. The 2006-07 academic year saw the introduction of two undergraduate degree courses taught in Tudela, in Physiotherapy and Mechanical Engineering (3 years), focusing specifically on industrial design. The new Tudela campus was opened at the beginning of the 2008-09 academic year.

Docencia:

The University offers a total of 26 official degree courses and several postgraduate programs, including master’s degrees adapted to the European Higher Education Area (EHEA) in a range of subjects and a selection of doctoral programs. There are also programs endorsed by the University itself, which include over ten master’s degrees, postgraduate diplomas and specialization courses in economics, quality management, health sciences, the environment and teacher training. Care is taken to offer specialized degrees and programs in areas that reflect the specific requirements of the labour market, to ensure that graduates are well prepared for professional life.

Research:

The Universidad Pública de Navarra has approximately 1,000 researchers working in its 101 registered research groups. Last year saw 46 new projects begun, 32 of which receive funding from government ministries and 14 of which are subsidized by the Autonomous Government of Navarre, with total financial support of over €4.6 million. In addition, two new projects were approved under the Seventh European IDT Framework Programme. One hundred and eighteen new research and cooperation agreements were signed, six under the CENIT program tender, with a total value of approximately €3.8 million. University researchers have applied for four new Spanish patents, five Spanish patents were awarded, and three licensing agreements were signed with companies for the use of University patents. In addition, in 2007, University researchers carried out over 100 research projects for private companies and institutions, most notably in the field of renewable energies and their relationship to the environment, in which the UPNA has become a pioneering institution. Extensive research is also carried out into nanotechnology, which is the driving force behind some of the latest development proposals in electronics and communications. Through the Fundación FIDeNa, the University is involved in the management of the PrincipiaTech Navarra technology centre, which aims to become a national benchmark for applied research in nanotechnology in Spain.

University Extension:

The University has extensive sports facilities, including an indoor swimming pool, a gymnasium, tennis courts, football and rugby pitches, and golf practice ranges. During the course of the year there is also a wide range of cultural activities, including concerts, film seasons, plays, exhibitions and sports competitions, and various student services ranging from general information and advice on academic matters, employment services, language study, accommodation, student associations, medical care and counselling.

International Relations:

The External Relations Office coordinates and manages all international mobility and cooperation activities, which include exchange initiatives (Erasmus, ISEP, bilateral agreements, etc.), the UPNA’s own Virrey Palafox programs (for exchanges with universities in Latin America) and charity work (for Third-World development cooperation schemes). Every year, some 600 students take part in university exchange programs.

Facilities and services:

The Pamplona campus offers a range of facilities including a library, a state-of-the-art language centre, canteens and cafeterias, sports facilities including the main University sports centre (with an indoor swimming pool, climbing wall, fitness centre, indoor pelota court and more), a golf driving range, tennis courts, multi-purpose courts, football pitches and a grass rugby pitch. There is also a University hall of residence for 250 students, the Student Information Office, computer rooms, full wireless coverage, assistance for students with disabilities, a medical care and counselling service, and the UPNA Employment Service, which provides careers guidance, a job mart and administrative support for arranging placements and internship. The University also encourages students to become involved in development cooperation, mobility projects and volunteer work. More information can be found on the UPNA website, www.unavarra.es.

Distinguishing features:

The Universidad Pública de Navarra is known for its modern, open attitude towards different sectors of society and people of different ideologies from diverse social, cultural and geographic backgrounds.
