Short description:

The UPSA was founded in 1940 and offers 40 undergraduate degree courses and a wide range of master’s and postgraduate programmes at its campuses in Salamanca and Madrid. The University is known for its small teaching groups and for the personalized attention and guidance received by students under the tutoring system. The UPSA is endowed with the best technical and technological equipment for students to complete their studies and is committed to quality and excellence, providing grants so that optimum academic records are attained. Students are also offered the possibility of completing dual and triple degrees and undertaking practical training through the UPSA’s agreements with leading companies.

History:

The founding charter of the Universidad Pontificia de Salamanca was signed on 25 September 1940 by Pope Pius XII, at the behest of the Spanish Episcopal Conference. This act reflected the wishes of Cardinal Enrique Plá y Deniel, the real architect of the University, who campaigned tirelessly for the restoration of studies in Theology and Canon Law that had been abolished under the Disendowment Act of Mendizabal passed on 21 May 1852. Although the UPSA as it stands today was established in the 20th century, its roots data back as far as the 13th century, when King Alfonso IX of Leon founded the Estudio Salamantino in the winter of 1218-19. However, the principal figure in the emergence of the University was King Alfonso X the Wise, who approved the Statute of 1254 establishing the royal and pontificial status of the institution, and which is often referred to as the Carta Magna del Estudio Salamantino.

Docencia:

Teaching at the UPSA has traditionally had both an academic and a vocational component, and although the teaching staff had long focused on providing quality tuition at undergraduate level, over recent years their work has extended to the teaching of a growing number of postgraduate programs. The University has a total teaching staff of 370, 34 of whom are full professors. Classes combine theory and practice, and where possible are offered to small, tutored groups of students.

Research:

In addition to transmitting knowledge to its students, the UPSA also has a long-standing commitment to knowledge creation, which is reflected in the ongoing work of its research groups, who are supported by generous funding and the resources provided by the Knowledge Transfer Office.

University Extension:

The UPSA strives to offer its students a broad range of activities to complement their academic training, including voluntary participation in the work of the university, cultural and leisure activities such as the La Máscara drama group and the Tomás Luis de Victoria choir, and extensive sports facilities and competitive clubs and events.
