Breve descripción:

The Universidad Pontificia Comillas is one most long-standing academic institutions of the Catholic Church, whose unique approach to higher education draws on the teaching traditions of the Society of Jesus (the Jesuits), who manage the largest number of universities of any private institution in the world, combining experience with a spirit of renewal that reflects the changing social requirements of our times. The Universidad Pontificia Comillas is composed of the School of Engineering, the Faculty of Law, the Faculty of Economic Sciences and Business Administration, the Faculty of Human and Social Sciences, the Faculty of Theology, the Faculty of Canon Law and the “San Juan de Dios” School of Nursing and Physiotherapy.

Historia:

The current profile of the Universidad Pontificia Comillas has its origins in the Seminary and Pontifical University of Comillas (Cantabria), founded in 1890, and the Catholic Institute of Arts and Industries (ICAI) in Madrid, which was founded in 1908. During the 1960’s, the University was transferred from Comillas to Madrid, where it has combined the teaching of ecclesiastical and non-ecclesiastical programs since 1969. In 1956, a Business School, known as the Catholic Institute of Business Management (“ICADE”, now the Faculty of Economic Sciences and Business Administration) was set up. In 1960, ICADE reached an agreement with its counterpart, the School of Engineering, or ICAI, to offer a postgraduate course and degree programs in Business Sciences and Law. The proximity of the two institutions in Madrid, their common management by the order of the Jesuits, and the complementary nature of the studies on offer led to their incorporation into the Universidad Pontificia Comillas on June 20, 1978.

Docencia:

Teaching at the Universidad Pontificia Comillas is characterized by academic rigour, quality, and a critical, creative view of higher education and its importance to society. The process of adaptation to the demands of the European Higher Education Area forms part of the University´s mission, and builds upon the traditional strengths of education offered by the Society of Jesus, rewarding hard work and effort, establishing a balance between academic theory and practice, and enhancing the international dimension of the programs on offer. Teaching at Comillas is enriched by a system of core values founded on Christian Humanism, including personalized attention, small teaching groups, guidance and advice on academic issues, the provision of modern resources and tools (libraries, laboratories, computer systems, etc.), the effective integration of graduates into the labour market, and financial assistance through the in-house grants and awards scheme. Notably, during the academic year 2010-11 our students were awarded 126 scholarships for high academic achievement by the Autonomous Community of Madrid, and 7 excellence scholarships by the University itself. In addition, Comillas students were awarded 313 grants by the Ministry of Education and Science and 320 study grants from the internal awards scheme.

Investigación:

Comillas devotes considerable resources to research, development and innovation designed to meet the technological, social and humanistic needs of society. Much of this work is carried out in direct association with the business sector, which accounts for 70% of the total revenue from activities of this type. Research is carried out by the University’s departments, institutes, chairs and 28 dedicated research groups, and Comillas currently has 292 research projects in progress.

Extensión universitaria:

The Office of the Vice Rector for International Relations and University Community Services oversees the organization of various activities in cooperation with different areas of the University. The International Division runs summer courses and special programs for international students in conjunction with other universities. Each July, the Comillas Preuniversity Campus program provides tuition and guidance to final-year secondary school students in preparation for admission to university studies. Other activities include competitions and awards in a range of cultural and social fields, charity work, and a specific five-year program for adult learners.

Relaciones internacionales:

The International Relations Service provides guidance and assistance in all matters related to student and staff mobility and oversees a range of summer, semester-long and full-year exchange initiatives, including the Inside programs and the Goya-Leonardo project for internships in European companies. Additional support is provided through the Service’s work to secure new funding agreements and the creation of new partnerships for international projects.

Instalaciones y servicios:

Comillas offers a range of services including medical care and counselling for students and staff, extensive organized sports activities through fully-owned and shared sports facilities, the Institute of Modern Languages, the Social Work Unit, and diverse programs including care initiatives for students with disabilities. The University also operates a Psychosocial Intervention Unit, a Cultural Activities Unit, an Information and Reception Office providing accommodation services, the Practical Training and Employment Office, which arranges placements and provides assistance with job hunting, a Charity Commitment and Development Cooperation Service, and the Pastoral Service.

Rasgos diferenciadores:

Education at the Universidad Pontificia Comillas stands out particularly for the careful selection of students, the personalized attention offered, the quality of teaching, its extensive internal grants and awards scheme, the high demand for graduates, and their consistent popularity with companies and institutions. The University has always been recognized for its innovative approach to higher education, and was a pioneer in the introduction of double degrees (Law and Business Administration, in 1960) and dual degrees with foreign universities (Master in International Business Science, in 1986). At the present time, it is possible to enroll in double degrees such as the following: the Undergraduate Degree in Law and the Undergraduate Degree in Political Science and Public Administration (E-5), and the Undergraduate Degree in International Relations and the Undergraduate Degree in Translation and Interpreting. New double degrees are offered, as well, with foreign universities, such as the Undergraduate Degree in Law, known as E-1 International, French or, similarly, E-1 International, American, in addition to the Double Undergraduate Degree in Translation and Interpreting at Comillas, and the Undergraduate Degree in Multi-Lingual Communication at the University of Geneva.
