The Universidad Politécnica de Cartagena (UPCT) is a young dynamic institution, fully adapted to the needs of the workplace, and equipped with the latest facilities and technology. The University seeks to be a public university of excellence committed to serving society and geared towards helping its students achieve the best results in the professional job market. Indeed, 80% of students find work within six months of graduating in fields closely related to engineering, architecture and business management. The Universitys theoretical teaching is complemented by an extensive program of internships in companies, backed up with career information and courses for finding employment.
The UPCT is the youngest Technical University in Spain. However, Engineering and Business studies have a long tradition in Cartagena with many of the citys schools in these disciplines having been founded at the beginning of the last century. This union between youth and tradition gives the UPCT its dynamic and innovative character. The UPCT is located in the heart of Cartagena, with many of its facilities housed in the citys historical buildings: Old Naval Hospital (18th C.), Antigones Barracks (18th C.) and La Milagrosa Building (19th C.).
The UPCT offers a wide range of degrees in Engineering, Architecture and the Business Sciences with a low student-teacher ratio, which encourages good close supervision. The reforms to the university system introduced by the Bologna process will allow students to study bachelors and masters degree designed to meet the professional needs of Europe.
There are 72 groups conducting research at the UPCT. This means that since the foundation of the University, the Research Findings Transfer Office (OTRI) has gradually increased the number of contracts entered into with companies and public institutions. Likewise, considerable funding has been obtained from competitive research projects at regional, national and European levels. The Vice-Rector for Research and Innovation is currently developing an ambitious plan to support R&D+i activities.
The Social and Cultural Activities Service organizes a full program of conferences, workshops, musical performances, concerts, exhibitions and film showings, etc. A wide range of sporting activities is offered by the Sports Service. They include team sports (such as, football, basketball, etc.) water sports, hiking, climbing and horse riding.
The primary mission of the International Relations Service is to encourage the internationalisation of university life as an essential element in the students learning process, as well as in the teaching, research and continuous training of our staff. To fulfil its mission, the International Relations Service encourages international mobility by managing various exchange schemes such as ERASMUS, welcoming and encouraging the arrival of students, teachers and personnel from partner universities, signing international agreements for cooperation in all areas of the UPCTs work, and encouraging students to learn modern languages on exchange programs, while at the same time promoting the dissemination and knowledge of Spanish. It coordinates all other international actions with the UPCT and advises its members on international training programs and education.
