The Universidad Europea Miguel de Cervantes (UEMC) is a private, independent university in Valladolid with a student population of 1,500. Since the UEMC was founded in 2002 it has prioritized adaptation to the demands of the European Higher Education Area (EHEA), and offers quality theoretical tuition and practical classes to small groups of students in its modern teaching rooms and laboratories. As part of its commitment to European convergence, the UEMC introduced a collection of new EHEA bachelor´s degrees for the 2009-10 academic year.
The UEMC has grown in parallel with the European Higher Education Area (EHEA), and its governing bodies believe that full convergence is the best policy for working successfully under this new framework. Over the last few years, specialized academic and professional committees have been working to adapt existing curricula to the new EHEA bachelor´s degree structure, ensuring that they are compatible with the growing social and professional demand for competence-based learning and specific skills profiles. The UEMC´s young and dynamic teaching staff have also worked hard to prepare for the introduction of the EHEA, and have gradually integrated the new teaching methodologies required. Universities can strengthen the European impact of their activities by implementing the basic principles of the EHEA, and the UEMC provides an environment in which students can take an increasingly active role in the learning process, which is one of the major tenets of European convergence in higher education.
Researchers at the UEMC are involved in various independent projects and collaboration agreements with national and international companies and institutions, with the common aim of supporting social, economic and environmental development in the Valladolid and beyond. Key research areas at the University include: Relationships between agricultural land use and the distribution of forest fauna: Impact on conservation of biodiversity. Ecology and species conservation. Molecular genetics. Electronic signature recognition. Corporate, business and brand communication. Institutional and educational videos. Photography and documentation. Specialist journalism. Management of technological innovation. Professional skills in the company environment. Marketing strategy for the success and revitalization of urban commercial areas. Physical activity and aging. Effects of sports training on neuromuscular electro-stimulation. Quantification and prescription of physical activity in groups with special requirements.
Through the academic year, the University hosts a range of workshops, meetings, conferences and round table discussions on major contemporary issues, most notably the the program of events forming part of the UEMC´s Seminar on Contemporary Society and Culture (SEMSOCU). Students are offered diverse programs and activities to support their academic, cultural, sporting and personal development, including the University Debating Group, the Theatre Workshop, the Corporal Expression Group, the University Choir, Com.única magazine, and a range of general sports and recreational activities.
The Universidad Europea Miguel de Cervantes is a signatory to over 200 international agreements with other higher education institutions. UEMC students can choose to spend part of their degrees at another European university under the Erasmus Program, and the percentage of students taking part in Erasmus exchanges is among the highest found at any Spanish university. Outside the Erasmus network, the UEMC also holds agreements with many leading universities in North and South America for student exchange and the development of joint projects. The UEMC also welcomes students of Spanish language, who are offered the chance to obtain the full DELE Diploma awarded by the Instituto Cervantes.

The student is the key figure at the UEMC. The University and its teaching staff are committed to offering the student community a comprehensive learning experience that will stand them in good stead for integration into an increasingly competitive employment market. The combination of small class sizes and a high staff-student ratio ensures that individual progress is monitored effectively and raises the general quality of the tuition provided. The University is firmly of the opinion that preparation for professional life should involve more than excellent theoretical learning and applied practice, and that the stimulation and development of other personal qualities provides a solid foundation for future success. The strong practical and professional focus of programs at the UEMC is evident in teaching practices (including classroom-based learning, computer classes, laboratory work, field studies, etc.) and, in particular, in practical work and placements, which are supported by a network of agreements with over 750 prestigious organizations and companies. Almost 90% of UEMC students carry out a professional placement during their studies, and the first-hand experience and skills acquired strengthens their position in the labour market after graduation. According to a 2008 graduate report compiled by the Employment Observatory of the COIE, 86% of UEMC alumni are currently employed and secured a job within one year of completing their studies.
