Short description:
The Universidad Europea de Madrid began its activity in 1989 as an affiliated centre of the Universidad Complutense de Madrid. It was approved as a private university by Act of Parliament on 17 July 1995. The UEM is a member of Laureate International Universities, the first global network of private universities, which brings together higher education institutions in 20 countries around the world with over 500,000 students on their 100 campuses.
History:
All the universities in the network share the same sign of identity: the Laureate seal, a model that is based on integrating English as a second language by exploiting the new information technologies to the full and creating a highly practical, internationally recognized curriculum. The UEM’s primary mission is to become a reference point for university quality, forming leaders and professionals able to respond successfully to the needs of the new global society.

The UEM actively promotes its research and its links with the business world. University Extension:
The University Extramural Department, one of the main promoters of extra-curricular participation in the University, runs a large number of activities for students. Many are organized by the students themselves: the Paradigma theatre, the Jacarandá contemporary dance group, musical groups of all genres, the Campus Cinema, the Book club, the GLUEM club (the association of free-software and Linux users), the Motor club, the Photography club, summer courses organized by various faculties and departments and, of course, the UEM International Club which helps the growing number of international students to join in University life and to exchange impressions and experiences with Spanish students thinking of going abroad to study. International Relations:
The international dimension is an essential element of the UEM philosophy. Students who wish to do so can spend a minimum of 6 months abroad as part of their degree. In addition, the UEM’s links with leading universities around the world mean that students learn and share classes with students and lecturers from different countries and cultures. The UEM’s international training programs include exchange programs with universities in the Laureate Network in Europe, America and Asia, the Erasmus exchange program with over 200 destinations throughout Europe, and bilateral agreements with leading universities in the UK and the US. Facilities and services:
'The Universidad Europea de Madrid’s campus in Villaviciosa de Odón offers students an ideal study environment and places the latest technological resources at their disposal to help them deal successfully with all aspects of university life. The UEM is the first Spanish university to provide an unrestricted wireless Internet connection from anywhere on campus. Specialized laboratories: radio and television studios, architecture workshops and classrooms, environmental science laboratories, nursing and dentistry simulators, anatomy and histology, in addition to exercise physiology laboratories, a language lab, translation and interpreting booths, and so on. The UEM also has a radio station, a newspaper (El Universitario) and a travel agency. New additions include the simulated hospital and crime lab (Biomedicine/Biopathology R&D Laboratory), with the latest clinical and genetic analysis equipment, where research is carried out in sexology, viral loads, toxicology, genetic diagnosis and forensic biology. Completing the services for students at the Villaviciosa de Odón campus, the University has two ''Leonardo da Vinci'' halls of residence with room for 528 students, a library, cafeterias, open access computer rooms, extra-curricular activities, a university sports centre, a weights gym, a heated pool, an outdoor pool, an indoor sports hall, squash courts, aerobics studios, tennis courts, paddle courts, a soccer pitch and an athletics track. Other UEM centres in the city of Madrid include: A University polyclinic with a dual function: offering medical care to patients from the community, and training medical students in the specialities of dentistry, optometry, podiatry and physiotherapy. The polyclinic fulfils an important social role by providing first-class medical care for the Autonomous Community of Madrid. University dental hospital, for specialized dentistry students. Both have over 56 treatment rooms. La Moraleja Campus, located in one of Madrid’s leading business areas, hosts the UEM’s most prestigious postgraduate schools. The University offers a wide variety of postgraduate programs specializing in Health Sciences, Physical Activity and Sports, Economics, Law and Business, Communications, Art, and Architecture. It also boasts three postgraduate schools: the IEDE Business School, the Real Madrid School of University Studies, and the School of Constructions. '
