The Universidad de Valladolid (UVa) is one of Spains leading higher education centres, offering more than 100 undergraduate degrees, 80 doctoral programs (14 of which have received the Ministry of Educations mención de calidad in recognition of their quality) and 68 postgraduate degrees (43 masters and 25 specialist). The University dates back to the thirteenth century and has been a reference point for other university institutions in Spain and Europe ever since. Today, the UVas commitment to educational innovation and social progress is reflected in its concerted efforts to adapt to the requirements of the European Higher Education Area. The UVa offers almost a hundred undergraduate degrees in all disciplines and a wide variety of postgraduate qualifications at its four campuses in Valladolid, Palencia, Segovia, and Soria. Its facilities ensure that the students receive a fully-rounded, holistic education, the ultimate objective of any higher education institution. For students who wish to centre their professional career in the field of research, the UVas internationally renowned institutes and centres provide the ideal environment. At the new Science Park, UVa researchers are in constant contact with some of todays most innovative companies. This link with the business world is another of the Universitys firmest commitments, almost 90% of the UVas students carry out in-company placements, and more than 1400 agreements, contracts and projects are currently underway with companies and institutions for knowledge transfer, involving almost 70% of the Universitys academic staff. The University is also known for its wholehearted support for the European dimension. Each year the UVa receives almost 1000 students on the Erasmus/Socrates program, and sends around the same number abroad to study in Europes major cities. Its intense involvement in the Erasmus program is further borne out by the fact that it has the highest levels of teaching staff mobility in Europe. The UVa has signed more than 1000 bilateral Erasmus agreements and offers a wide variety of dual degree programs organized in cooperation with leading universities in France, Germany, the UK and Brazil.
The UVa is one of Europes oldest universities and maintains intact the prestige acquired over its 800 years of history. With four different campuses (Valladolid, Palencia, Segovia and Soria), it offers a total of 94 degrees, covering all academic disciplines. It also pays special attention to the transition from academia to the professional world, complementing its undergraduate degrees with 70 doctoral programs and 24 masters degrees, and the signature of agreements and the organization of trade fairs with some of the leading companies in Spain and abroad. Finally, its international vocation places it in particularly good stead for adapting to the Bologna Plan, for example, last year it was Europes leading university in lecturer exchanges under the Socrates program, and it has been accepted on the Erasmus Mundus ECW program with Chile, under which at least 215 students will be able to study abroad.
Universities have the duty to lead research activity and to play a key part in the generation of new knowledge to contribute to human and social wellbeing. To meet these challenges, the University of Valladolid hosts high level research in the areas of the humanities, social sciences, experimental sciences, architecture and engineering, and biomedical sciences. Over 60% of the UVas research staff possess doctorates. UVa researchers carry out their work at the various research units: nearly 60 departments, 160 recognized interdisciplinary research groups, eight university institutes plus nine research centres of its own, and six technology centres in which the University is a stakeholder. The University manages more than 600 research projects funded via public R+D+i competitions at regional, national and European level, and over 300 contracts and agreements for knowledge and technology transfer for a mean value of 12 million euros. Its researchers participate in almost 200 projects and contracts managed by other institutions. As a result of this research activity, the University holds 59 patents, publishes around 600 articles annually in journals included in the SCI and over 200 books, and presents around 2,000 papers and communications at congresses in Spain and abroad. More than 150 PhD theses are presented each year.
The area of Extension and Culture at the UVa manages a wide range of activities, including the following: Film cycles, the International Jazz Festival of the University of Valladolid UNIVERSIJAZZ, the Santa Cruz Summer Festival, concerts, cultural workshops on topical issues, extracurricular courses and a varied program of training activities (La UVa en curso). The UVa boasts sports facilities of all kinds: gymnasiums, sports halls, outdoor sports fields, athletics tracks, tennis and paddle courts, and indoor swimming-pools. All the University members may use them on acquiring a sports card, and more than 15 different sports can be played. The University also has a series of museums to complement the training of its students and lecturers. The University Museum (MUVa), located in the Palacio de Santa Cruz, is the result of cooperation between all the university departments and centres which have loaned some of their most valuable assets. The MUVa also houses the Museum of Anatomy, the Museum of Ophthalmology, and the Museum of Natural Sciences. The Alberto Jiménez-Arellano Alonso Foundation is based at the Palacio de Santa Cruz. The Foundation promotes artistic activities that represent essential human values such as freedom and tolerance. Its art collection is on public display, and the Foundation organizes a series of activities that aim to further knowledge and research into different forms of artistic expressions. The UVas music and theatre groups have made the institution a reference point for the all-round development of university students. Among the most important are the University Choir, the Young Orchestra, the Ancient Museum Group, the Theatre Group and the Brotherhood of Christ.Completing the vast range of cultural events, the UVa has more than 50 students associations devoted to other types of cultural activity.
The UVa is firmly committed to promoting the international involvement of its students and lecturers. It has signed more than 150 agreements with universities in Europe, America, Asia and Africa which make possible an almost constant flow of lecturers and students both UVa members going abroad and foreigners coming to study here. The UVa has set up a series of agreements with foreign universities to allow students to obtain dual degrees awarded jointly by the two institutions. Under this dual degree program, students carry out part of their studies at a foreign institution, which grants them their official degree. The University grants scholarships (either ERASMUS / SOCRATES or its own) for students who participate in the program. The program is advertised in the months of December and January. Almost 2,000 students have now participated in exchange programs with other institutions in the EHEA. The University also organizes placements for its students outside the academic environment: agreements have been reached with numerous foreign companies to enable students to obtain work experience by means of temporary in-company placements. The UVa is the leading European university in terms of academic staff exchange under the Socrates program. Each year the University sends more than 200 lecturers abroad and welcomes nearly 50. The Universitys International Relations Service has organized a new Academic Staff Exchange Program with universities in Europe, America and Japan.
The University is particularly concerned to meet the social needs of its community. It offers a wide range of services including a medical service, legal consultancy service, care for the disabled, a work-related accident prevention service, a crèche, and an environmental quality office.
By means of its flexibility and the constant re-evaluation of its courses, the UVa provides its students with a holistic, all-round education which enhances both their academic and their personal development. Students choose from more than 100 degrees and more than 40 postgraduate degrees, there are over 1300 places at the University Halls of Residence, and the library holds more than 700,000 volumes. From the moment they matriculate, students also have access to a complete range of complementary services and facilities in addition to the libraries: study rooms, computing rooms, sports facilities and dining-halls.
