Short description:

With over 500 years of history, the Universidad de Sevilla (US) is an institution with an acknowledged reputation, strongly rooted in the life of Seville and Andalusia, and firmly established in the Spanish university world. It is also a university with an excellent prospects for the future, thanks to the calibre of its teaching staff and its impressive scientific production, its firm commitment to incorporating new technologies and innovative teaching methods, its concerted efforts to bring its facilities up to the level of the best in the world, and its wholehearted support for internationalization. Tradition and modernity, then, are the University’s two main assets. It offers its 60,000 students a wide variety of degrees at both undergraduate and postgraduate level, and countless academic, cultural, guidance and sports services as well. The strong impulse it has given to in-company placements has boosted the employment prospects of its graduates, and its support for the European dimension has also allowed more than 1,500 students from the University to carry out study periods in high-ranking universities all over Europe. And, in the opposite direction, the University of Seville is the second most popular Spanish destination for Erasmus students.

History:

'The University was founded in 1505, when the Archdeacon of the Cathedral of Seville, Master Rodrigo Fernández de Santaella, obtained a Bull from Pope Julius II to build a College-University (the College of St Mary of Jesus) in the city to teach ''Arts, Logic, Philosophy, Theology, Canon Law, Civil Law and Medicine''. When the Bull was confirmed in 1508, the University of Seville was awarded all the privileges enjoyed by the other universities of the realm. In the mid-twentieth century, the University moved to the Royal Tobacco Factory, built by the engineer Van der Beer during the reign of Ferdinand VI. In the 1960s the Technical Schools of Architecture and Industrial Engineering were opened, and in the following decade courses in Economics and Pharmacy were launched, the Faculty of Sciences was divided into the Faculties of Biology, Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, and the University College of La Rábida was opened. As these new courses were introduced, the University also began to decentralize. Higher education centres were set up in the provinces of Badajoz, Cadiz and Cordoba, which would form the basis of the new universities that we know today. '

Docencia:

The University offers a wide range of courses, with 75 undergraduate degrees (of which 32 are already adapted to the EHEA) and 42 official master’s courses taught at its 25 faculties and schools. The US forms part of an important international higher education network, in which students study part of their degree elsewhere in the knowledge that the courses undertaken at their host institution will be fully recognized on their return. The Erasmus program is the most popular exchange program among University of Seville students, offering 2,700 places at more than 400 European universities. All holders of Erasmus study grants receive a monthly payment of 650 euros. Students awarded grants by the Spanish Ministry of Education and Science receive 1,000 euros. The Erasmus program has recently expanded to cover in-company student placements, staff training, and teaching visits to other European universities by University of Seville lecturers. The University offers meal vouchers, aid for accommodation in students’ residences, aid for students with special needs and a wide range of grants for students who combine their studies with temporary work inside university units.
