Breve descripción:

The University of Oviedo is one of the oldest universities in Spain, and combines four hundred years of tradition and experience with the dynamism of an innovative and forward-thinking institution. The University has a strong regional identity, and is one of the leading figures in the cultural and scientific development of the city of Oviedo and Asturias as a whole.

Historia:

The University of Oviedo was founded in 1574 by the Prelate Fernando de Valdés Salas, and in 1608 began to offer tuition in the arts, canons, laws and theology. At this early stage, the University worked primarily to consolidate the quality of its teaching in these four areas. The eighteenth century was a period of change and renewal, and at the end of the nineteenth century the University set up the first centre for university outreach and continuous learning activities in Spain.

Docencia:

The University of Oviedo currently offers over 70 degree courses in its 26 faculties and university schools and six affiliated schools. Teaching quality is one of the institution’s strategic priorities, and both the degree programs and the teaching staff responsible for tuition undergo thorough periodic reviews in which the viewpoints of all sectors of the university community are considered.

Investigación:

The University of Oviedo has a thriving research culture. In 2004, the work of its 290 research groups attracted funding with a total value of over 13 million euros for 350 projects and contracts, and doctoral students at the University present around 200 theses each academic year.

Extensión universitaria:

The University organizes a diverse program of cultural and non-academic activities throughout the year, including conferences, concerts, exhibitions and workshops. Academic activities include 125 summer courses, offered to over 7,000 students at 25 centres throughout Asturias. There is also a university program (PUMUO) for those aged over 55 who did not receive a university education.

Relaciones internacionales:

The University of Oviedo fosters the international dimension on its three spheres of action: teaching, research and services. The aim is to facilitate the possibility of undegraduate and postgraduate students carrying out part of their studies or practical training at a foreign university or firm. Every year, it offers 1.300 places at more than 400 universities in different countries in America, Europe and Asia. Reciprocally, the University takes in more than 1.100 foreign students each year form Europe, the USA, Latin America, Oceania and Asia, who participate in the different undergraduate and postgraduate exchange programmes, in Spanish Language and Culture Courses or who follow complete Master´s or PhD courses and research.

Instalaciones y servicios:

In addition to its libraries, the University offers a range of academic and technical services including the Audiovisual Media service, the University Publisher, the Image Processing service, a Risk Prevention service, a Data Centre, the European Documentation Centre, a Computer Graphics Centre, and various Scientific-Technical Laboratories. There are also extensive sports facilities and organized sports activities available at all university sites. Dining rooms with vending machines and microwaves are available to students on all campuses. The University also offers a daycare and nursery service for the children of staff and students. Excellent public transport links connect the university campuses with the major towns and cities of the region, and a number of specific public services are offered to university students.

Rasgos diferenciadores:

The University of Oviedo places great importance on the future of its students, and the recently opened Universit centre offers students careers advice, an employment service, information about over 500 paid placements and internships, and assistance with applications. Universit organizes an annual Employment Forum in association with over 60 companies, making it one of the largest events of its type held at any Spanish university. The internet is increasingly used as a learning tool, and the University uses its Aulanet e-learning platform to facilitate access to course materials for 500 subjects in a range of degree programs. In addition, three University of Oviedo-endorsed degrees can now be studied entirely on-line: Specialist in social education: educational intervention and social welfare, University expert in traffic accident investigation, and University expert in industrial design management.
