The Universidad de Las Palmas de Gran Canaria (ULPGC) is on the island of Gran Canaria in the Canary Islands, but it has a second campus on the island of Lanzarote. The ULPGC offers students a rigorous training in a wide range of degree courses and seeks to provide them with a high quality education based on innovative practices, an interdisciplinary approach and an international outlook.
The University Reorganization Act, passed by the Parliament of the Canary Islands, led to the foundation of the University in May 1989. The new University grew out of a merger between the Universidad Politécnica de Canarias (originally founded in 1979 as the Universidad Politécnica de Las Palmas) and other institutes of tertiary education on Gran Canaria, some of which have roots on the island dating back to the nineteenth century. The ULPGC is, therefore, a university that provides a unique combination of modernity and experience.
The ULPGC teaches five EHEA bachelors degrees, 54 undergraduate degrees (five of which can be studied online at the Universitys Virtual Campus), one ULPGC-specific bachelors degree, nine official postgraduate degrees, 17 on-campus postgraduate courses and a further 27 online, 57 PhD programs and various special training programs for mature students. The ULPGC extends over five campuses, three of which are in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, one in Arucas in the north of the island and another on Lanzarote. All classes and lectures are backed up by the Universitys e-learning platform, while first-year students can take special bridging courses to ensure they have the right level of knowledge before embarking on their degree courses. Students enjoy access to study rooms, computer centres and laboratory facilities. They can also borrow laptop computers and are given a university email address. Other services include help in overcoming any academic study problems and the possibility of applying for one of the ULPGCs own study grants, which combined with those awarded by the Ministry of Education and the Government of the Canary Islands, mean that more than 3,300 students receive financial support.
The ULPGC employs an academic teaching staff of more than 1,500 members who, in addition, are engaged in a significant amount of research activity. The University has 153 active research groups some of which enjoy international standing, as well as four Research Centres and four University Research Institutes. The ULPGC is currently leading 286 research projects. The research of these groups reflects the multidisciplinary nature of the Universitys 36 Departments: twelve of which work in the field of technology, eleven in the natural and health sciences, six in the social sciences and law and seven in the humanities. The University has published studies in fields as wide ranging as oceanography and the marine sciences, aquaculture, informatics and robotics, nutrition, cancer, information and communication technology, renewable energy sources, transport economics, organization of the firm, urban planning, translation and the history of the Canary Islands. The ULPGC is committed to creating Science and Technology Parks aimed at promoting the transfer of the results of its R+D+i to a wider community, and at encouraging the foundation of new technology start-up companies. One such park is already up and running on the Tafira Campus, and agreements have been reached for the setting up of two more one in Guía (in the north of Gran Canaria) and the other on the island of Fuerteventura. The ULPGCs commitment to these parks reflects its objective of participating in the economic development of the Canary Islands, as well as acting as a platform for supporting development aid in countries in Latin America and Africa with which it enjoys longstanding links.
The ULPGC boasts a wide cultural and sporting agenda for all university members, which serves to complement their academic studies. The program aims to give students a well-rounded, liberal education, promoting values of solidarity, social justice, equality between the sexes, and respect for diversity and the environment. To achieve these aims, the ULPGC runs various Culture Clubs offering a varied program of cinema, theatre, jazz concerts, comedy shows, conferences, courses and workshops. Students taking part in these activities are entitled to register for free-choice credits. Students are also encouraged to take part in volunteer schemes run by NGOs and environmental groups on the University Campus. In the summer, the ULPGC is involved in a number of activities organized throughout the Canary Islands - in Maspalomas, Lanzarote, La Gomera, Gáldar and Agaete. The ULPGC also runs exhibition rooms where it presents works of contemporary art, while the Universitys Main Hall, the Paraninfo, is used to celebrate important events organized by the University as well as those organized in collaboration with other institutions on the Canary Islands.
The ULPGC runs an International Relations office which is in charge of the various student exchange programs, organized throughout Europe and with universities in Latin America and the United States. If we include both ULPGC students and visiting students, there are currently 929 students participating on Socrates/Erasmus programs, 55 students on similar programs organized in Latin America and the US, 247 students on the Sicue-Séneca mobility programs with the Spanish State, and 29 university teachers on exchange programs in Europe. The fact that the Canary Islands lie at the nexus between three continents Europe, Africa and America has enabled the ULPGC to maintain strong ties with those countries with which the islands have traditionally maintained contact. Today, the university has signed 136 agreements with its foreign counterparts and participates in seven projects with Latin America and five with Africa via the Spanish Agency for International Aid.
The ULPGC is fully equipped with libraries, reading and study rooms and computer labs which help ensure that students obtain all the support they might need to make the most of their classes and lectures. Students enjoy ready access to books and journals both in the libraries and online. The University Library opens its reading rooms 24 hours a day, and students can consult books from the shelves and take material out on loan. The library also has photocopying facilities, online information search services and a system for requesting new library acquisitions. There is also a laptop loan service designed to enhance the provision of computer facilities. The Vice-Rector for Students, together with the Fundación Universitaria, provides support to final-year students as they seek to enter the job market. They organize milkround recruitment fairs and a range of activities and courses aimed at boosting students chances of finding the right job opportunity. The ULPGC runs a Sports Service offering university members the opportunity to practice sports on its playing fields or in its indoor sports centres. Among the sports organized are handball, basketball, volleyball, badminton, indoor, five-a-side football, athletics, rugby, football, squash, bodybuilding, wrestling, gymnastics, aerobics, etc. The service also organizes a program of outdoor activities in the islands great natural environments. These include hiking, orienteering, canoeing, mountain-biking, underwater diving, parachuting, paragliding, and even bungee jumping. ULPGC students can study English, French, German, Arabic, Chinese, Dutch, Italian, Portuguese, Modern Greek and Korean on courses organized by the language school, Aula de Idiomas. The ULPGC organizes many environmental conservation activities that students can participate in aimed at protecting the environment of its campuses and promoting sustainable practices.
The ULPGCs mission is to train skilled, educated individuals, with a sense of responsibility and commitment to the wider community. It is committed to providing innovative teaching and research that has a real impact on societys advancement, and to promoting, wherever possible, stronger international ties. The ULPGC is widely recognized for the all-round ability of its graduates, the academic prestige enjoyed by its faculty members, the professional approach adopted by its administrative and services staff and the impact of its social actions. All this is achieved in a modern university where online registration is now possible which gives students the opportunity to further their education while taking part in a range of activities that complement their academic program. http://www.ulpgc.es - universidad@ulpgc.es
