The Universidad de La Rioja (UR) is a public campus university with some 7,000 students enrolled on its undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctoral programs. It offers a teaching system that has successfully integrated new technologies such as the wi-fi campus and the virtual classroom, with small groups and personal tutors who guide students through their degree studies. The UR has an in-company placement system and also offers students the chance to study at around a hundred campuses in Europe, America (US, Canada and Brazil), Asia (Japan and China) and Australia.
Founded in 1992, the University took over from the local university schools and colleges which offered teaching and research activities in the humanities, the social sciences, science and technology. The establishment of the UR continued the tradition of the scriptorium of the Monasteries of San Millán de la Cogolla, considered to be the cradle of the Spanish language and one of the most important early mediaeval scriptoria in Europe. The coat of arms of the University bears the initials of the San Millán codices.
In the 2009-2010 academic year, the University is teaching ten new undergraduate courses adapted to the European convergence process. The UR bases its personalized teaching system on creating the conditions for an all-round education. When students start their studies they are assigned a personal tutor - a lecturer on their course - who provides help and guidance throughout their degree studies. A first year week is organized to familiarize new students with the facilities and services available. Before the start of the year, the Mathematics Week refreshes students knowledge of the mathematics required in degrees such as Engineering, Computer Science, and Business Administration. During the examination period, the University Library remains open practically 24 hours a day.
The University has strengthened its research activity by setting up the Institute of Sciences of the Vine and Wine (ICVV), affiliated to the CSIC, Spains National Research Council, and five research centres of its own. The Research Results Transfer Office has exceeded the million euro mark in the contracting of R+D+i projects, and the Dialnet Foundation is developing the largest unrestricted access database of scientific articles on the Internet in Spanish (http://dialnet.unirioja.es).
Outside class, students at UR may take part in sporting activities, whether official, competitive, or just for their own enjoyment (fitness, aerobics, dance, and so on). Throughout the academic year, the URs outreach program includes conferences, courses, seminars and lectures on music (opera, music therapy), cinema, literature, science week, competitions (road safety, environment), and so on, and an annual summer course program. The Student Council runs the various university associations in the areas of sports, literature, radio, and so on.
The UR is a cosmopolitan campus where students of different cultures and nationalities come together, thanks to the courses in Spanish language and culture for foreigners, the development cooperation programs, and the international mobility grants. The Erasmus and Americampus programs promote the exchange of students, who may complete their studies by spending either a term or a full academic year at one of the nearly 100 campuses with which the UR has signed agreements.
The UR is a young campus with expansive green areas, and is fully connected to the Internet through wi-fi technology. Located in the city of Logroño, just a stones throw from the centre, it is an ideal place to study. The University Library, in the middle of the campus, has over 287,000 volumes, a laptop loan service, and areas for individual study and group work. Each building has computer rooms where students will find software applications for each degree course. The University Sports Complex provides a wide variety of sports facilities.
The University is the only public campus in the region. Founded in 1992, its adaptation to new technologies features strongly it teaches two online undergraduate courses and, via the DIALNET Foundation, it is currently developing the largest unrestricted online database in the Spanish language. As befits a region that is world famous for its wine, the UR offers a course in Oenology, the first degree course of its kind at a Spanish campus, created in 1996, and the undergraduate course in Hispanic Philology, which it accompanies with the courses in Spanish language and culture for foreigners and the online masters course in Teaching Spanish as a Foreign Language.
