The Universided de Huelva (UHU) is a young dynamic institution, striving for excellence and a promising future for its 11,000 students, dedicated to research and knowledge transfer, and committed to making a positive contribution to wider society.
The Universidad de Huelva, founded as an independent institution in 1993, is a public university dedicating to serving the needs of society, committed to the creation and dissemination of knowledge and to the enrichment of individuals through study, teaching and research.
One of the strategic priorities at UHU is to provide students with a comprehensive educational experience, placing particular importance on preparing them for the demands of professional life. The University fosters excellence in teaching, promoting a culture of quality that pervades all of the degree courses on offer and providing students with the skills required to forge successful careers after graduation. The UH teaching staff is the youngest at any Spanish university and regularly takes part in an in-house training and assessment program designed to identify key teaching areas that meet students needs.
Research at the University of Huelva is some of the most exciting to be found at any Spanish university, engaging with the business sector in new and creative ways. Special emphasis is placed on science and technology, social science and humanities, and health and human sciences. Research activity is facilitated through funding to individual research groups, post-doctoral grants and a program of incentives for participating in joint initiatives with foreign research groups. There are currently more than 80 research groups at the UHU. The Central Services are divided into five units (samples preparation, X-ray, electron microscopy, chromatography and elemental analysis), whose expertise and cutting-edge technical infrastructures are available to University researchers, external research teams and companies with special research and technological requirements. The University operates its own Research Plan and offers a service for the translation of scientific articles into English.
CULTURE. The Universitys Cultural Promotion Area organizes wide range of cultural activities each year, such as exhibitions, theatre seasons, lectures, concerts and various competitions, making the UHU a key figure in the cultural life of the local area. SPORTS. The Sports Activities Service offers a selection of basic and advanced courses in a variety of sports and activities and organizes internal, interuniversity and national competitions in different events.
The Universidad de Huelva has always had a markedly international outlook and maintains agreements with universities and higher education institutions across Europe, encouraging students to develop an open, global perspective and work alongside visiting students. The UHU offers 12 joint international degrees, making it one of the leading universities in Spain in this area, and promotes awareness of cultures with a growing presence in Spain through its Hispano-Asian Centre and Slavic Centre, as well as consolidating existing links with Latin-American culture and institutions.
The Universidad de Huelva offers students and staff a wealth of services to make their time at the University easier and more enjoyable. The University Community Assistance Service (SACU) distributes information on entrance examinations, general academic procedures, grants and awards announcements, workshops, courses, seminars and a range of University activities, as well as providing guidance on academic, social and psychological matters (information for students with disabilities and international students, a volunteer service, and advice on finding accommodation). Every campus has an enquiries and information office. The Academic Management Service handles all academic procedures, including entrance examinations, grants, UHU-endorsed degrees and all other procedures through to graduation. The University Library manages the extensive collection of bibliographic resources that support the work of students, teaching staff and researchers, and the Galileo Galilei Classroom Block provides study rooms that can be used 24 hours a day, seven days a week throughout the academic year. UHU integrates new technologies into daily student life: all campuses have full WiFi coverage, many administrative services are now available online, over 8,000 students regularly access the virtual campus to monitor their studies, and laptop computers are available for student use in the UHU libraries.
The Universidad de Huelva has a style of its own, based on the thorough application of a teaching system that prioritizes consistent effort and continuous assessment to ensure the highest level of excellence in the learning process. This is achieved by keeping class sizes as small as possible, the average being 15 students per class, integrating information and communication technologies into the learning process, setting regular class-based assignments, providing group and individual tutorials and encouraging students to complete placements in companies and public institutions. Students are also offered the option of studying some subjects entirely in English. The UHU is committed to student mobility and to the development of the transferable skills and competences required by the new knowledge society, as well as closely monitoring the progress of its graduates. The UHU also maintains a string regional identity and is fully integrated into the life of the local community and the activities of local businesses.
