Short description:

The history of the Universidad de Granada (UGR) stretches back over 475 years, during which time the University has witnessed a series of major historical events and grown in social and cultural influence to become the intellectual and cultural centre of southern Spain. The UGR is now a firmly established institution committed to serving society through teaching, research and other services. The University has grown at an unprecedented rate in recent years and is now one of the largest universities in Spain.

History:

The Universidad de Granada was founded in 1531 by the Emperor Carlos V under the authorization of a papal bull issued by Pope Clemente VII, reflecting the city´s status as an intellectual centre open to cultural difference and diverse beliefs, inheriting the tradition established by the 14th Century Arabic madrasah founded under Yusuf I.

Docencia:

As it prepares to introduce the new official Bachelor´s Degrees and Master´s Degrees, the UGR currently offers 51 undergraduate degrees and diplomas, 141 doctoral programs, 201 lifelong learning courses (30 master´s degrees, 53 higher training courses, 5 UGR-specific qualifications and 113 specialization courses). In addition, the Mediterranean Centre organized 45 courses for the current academic year and 12 further programs as part of the Summer School in Ceuta and Melilla. The Modern Languages Centre offers courses in Spanish as a foreign language, which were attended last year by 6,816 students, and courses in a range of modern languages for Spanish-speaking students, with over 4,000 places filled in 2008-09. The UGR offers a comprehensive range of academic programs including lifelong learning and postgraduate studies to complement the growing number of official EHEA programs.

Research:

Research at the UGR is carried out by over 300 research groups, which are involved in 1000 official projects funded or subsidized by government bodies and various national and international companies. Over half of the research funding received by UGR groups is provided under the National Research and Development promoted by the Spanish Ministry of Science and Innovation. Other national public bodies have provided close to €1 million over the past year, and a further €3 million has been received from the current Andalusian Research Plan in the form of grants, scholarships and other awards. Research activity at the University is supported by the Scientific Instrumentation Centre (http://cic.ugr.es), which offers services including analytical techniques, fundamental biology, radiometric dating and isotopic geology, structure determination, electron microscopy, animal breeding and experimentation, and image processing. The International Projects Office (OFPI) (http://invest.ugr.es/ofpi) oversees and promotes research projects in international fields, and the Research Results Transfer Office (OTRI) (http://invest.ugr.es/otri) manages relations between UGR research groups and entre the industrial sector. Researchers are supported by a variety of grants, scholarships and contracts, including 302 teacher and researcher training grants, 124 teaching and research grants provided under the Andalusian Research Plan, 156 contracts for doctoral students nearing completion of their studies, and 460 contracts and scholarships attached to specific research groups and projects.
