The Universidad Castilla-La Mancha (UCLM) is a young, dynamic university that continues to grow and progress to meet the needs of its students. Thanks to a privileged in the heart of Spain, excellent road and rail links to the rest of the country, an extensive, varied range of academic courses taught, modern facilities and services, and highly qualified teaching and research staff, UCLM attracts thousands of applicants for undergraduate and postgraduate study each year. Students can choose from a total of 50 degree programs, including 12 masters degrees, taught at the Cuenca and Toledo campuses and UCLM sites in the towns od Almadén, Puertollano and Talavera de la Reina. Many of the programs on offer are adapted to the requirements of the European Higher Education Area (EHEA), and the same standards of teaching excellence are maintained across all subjects and at all levels of study.
The Universidad de Castilla-La Mancha was recognized by law in 1982 but did not begin teaching until its official foundation in October 1985. The opening of UCLM was a response to public calls for higher education in the region, and the University has proudly served the two million inhabitants of Castilla-La Mancha ever since. UCLM has made a significant contribution to social progress by providing young people with access to higher education and training generations of highly qualified young men and women who would go on to make decisive contributions to the development of the public and private sectors in the region. The student community, along with 2,200 members of teaching staff and 1,200 administration and services staff, make up the Universitys human capital and work diligently to meet the high quality expectations of the institution. The Universidad de Castilla-La Mancha is a regional institution spread across four campuses, in Albacete, Ciudad Real, Cuenca and Toledo, with further teaching facilities in the towns of Almadén, Puertollano and Talavera de la Reina. The Universitys central administration services and Rectors Office are based in Ciudad Real, and each campus has its own, independent Vice-Rectors Office. The different sites are linked by a fibre-optic network capable of supporting up to thirty simultaneous video conference calls, used for teaching and administrative purposes, and a series of real-time voice and data networks, ensuring that everything taking place at the University is available to the whole UCLM community.
Students are the priority at UCLM and receive a warm welcome and personalized academic support from the moment they arrive, and the tutorial system provides help and guidance for configuring the ideal personal and academic pathway through their studies. Theory is a key aspect of the teaching approach adopted by a young, highly-qualified team of faculty members and is complemented by a wide range of practical sessions in state-of-the-art laboratories, with the further option of voluntary practical training in respected companies in relevant sectors. Furthermore, education today requires a knowledge of foreign languages and new technologies, which is why UCLM promotes the international mobility of its students and provides a wide variety of IT services, from unrestricted use of workstations to the loan of laptops in libraries, WiFi coverage in all buildings and remote Internet access. The extensive range of degree courses, the network of libraries, the in-house grant program, the cultural and sporting activities and the availability of public halls of residence on all campuses make UCLM the ideal choice for those looking to study at a vibrant, forward-thinking university that is ready to face the challenges of the European Higher Education Area, in which students will take the leading role.
The Universidad de Castilla-La Mancha carries out basic academic research and extensive applied research that provides tangible benefits to the local business sector through the transfer of technology and research results. This has added greatly to the prospects of UCLM graduates, who have access to closer links with local manufacturing and business sectors. In 2008, the Universidad de Castilla-La Mancha attracted research funding with a total value of 32.9 million, broken down as follows: 10.3 million for regional projects, 7.6 million for national projects, 1.3 million for European projects and 11.4 million for contracts with the private sector. Similarly, from its outset UCLM has ensured that funds are put back into the research activity of its teaching staff, with 2.1 put aside for this purpose in 2008. UCLM has successfully consolidated major research groups and an increasing number of projects have been undertaken in conjunction with groups from other Spanish and foreign universities. The University has a number of teams of recognized national and international prestige and aims to support their continuing success.
The UCLM campuses are bursting with life, and it would be impossible for any of the cities in which the University is based to overlook the presence of almost 30,000 students. Outside teaching hours, students can take part in the array of cultural and sports activities through which UCLM contributes to the life of the region, particularly the towns and cities of Albacete, Ciudad Real, Cuenca, Toledo, Talavera de la Reina, Puertollano and Almadén. Students receive professional qualifications and education in values but are also able to enjoy the beautiful surroundings and impressive heritage of the area and a wealth of activities available on and off campus. Outside the academic year, the Universitys teaching activities continue through its summer courses, which provide the perfect opportunity to address matters of political, social, cultural and artistic interest or to delve deeper into the latest scientific and technical advances in different fields of knowledge and learning. The presence of teaching and research staff from various universities, of journalists and politicians, artists and writers, educators, businesspeople and representatives from associations of various kinds are evidence of the UCLMs success opening its doors to the wider community and engaging in its progress and development.
Student and staff mobility is another of the strategic objectives set by the Universitys governing body and a fundamental principle of the European Higher Education Area, showing that UCLM is making great strides towards internationalization. During the last academic year approximately 500 UCLM students spent a period of study at a university in the European Union under the Erasmus program, while 555 incoming European students were welcomed to Castilla-La Mancha. Similarly, UCLM relations with universities in countries not attached to the Erasmus program have been extended considerably, which is reflected in the signing of 261 bilateral agreements. The Universidad de Castilla-La Mancha also maintains strong links with a number of Latin-American universities, and recently introduced a teaching and research program for North Africa and the Near East.
The Universidad de Castilla-La Mancha provides a wide variety of resources to facilitate student life: 50,000 m2 of laboratory space, 30 research centres and institutes, one million reference works, 4,500 library booths and special language learning programs are geared to the needs of the university community and of wider society. In the area of new technologies, students enjoy unrestricted use of 4,500 computer workstations on every campus, full WiFi coverage in every building, an e-mail account, training courses in new technologies, remote access to the Internet, and laptops and pen drives available for loan in libraries. In addition, UCLM has an extensive network of sports facilities across its campuses and runs a series of cultural activity programs for students. Students with disabilities and students requiring counselling services at any point during their time at UCLM are also catered for. Study grants and financial assistance, a network of affordable public halls of residence costing around 315-350 per month, and a host of other advantages make UCLM a popular choice with students and a leading institution in the Spanish university system.
