The Universidad de Burgos (UBU) has a proud heritage. Dynamic, innovative, welcoming, and international, the University offers individual attention to all its students. Currently it offers over 30 different undergraduate degrees taught by highly motivated and qualified academic staff, more than 20 doctoral programs, several official masters programs, and other postgraduate courses adapted to the requirements of the European Higher Education Area.
The modern University came into being on 26 May 1994, when the King of Spain signed the Act establishing its foundation. However, university studies in the city have a very long history: the Hospital del Rey, the Kings Hospital, now home to the Rectorate and the Faculty of Law, was founded in 1195 by King Alfonso VIII. The entrance to the building is a fine gateway called the Puerta de Romeros, built in 1526 by the artist Juan de Salas. Today the UBU is a dynamic public institution which draws on its historical heritage and on the commitment and dedication of its staff to offer excellence in education and to carry out high level multidisciplinary research. This dedication has established the University as a key player in the socio-economic development of the Autonomous Community of Castile-Leon. As the UBU set out on the task of adapting to the requirements of the EHEA, the high standards of its research and its teaching at undergraduate and postgraduate level were recognized by the Ministry of Education, which awarded it a Certificate of Quality for the service provided by the University Library and for many of its doctoral PhD programs and European projects. In fact, great strides forward have been made in all areas of university activity: the training of qualified professionals ready to enter the work place, the production of quality research, the dissemination of results in international journals of acknowledged prestige, the promotion of its international dimension through exchange agreements with European and American universities, and cooperation with business through knowledge and technology transfer, thanks to the excellent relations the UBU enjoys with the business world in Castile-Leon and elsewhere.
Four characteristics of the teaching at the University of Burgos deserve special mention: The UBU is among Spains top ten universities in terms of teaching quality. Its students have a success rate of 80%. It is the sixth-ranked university in Spain in terms of the number of computers per student. It has one of the ten best university libraries in Spain. The University offers competitive programs and study plans, and has gained a reputation for the excellence of its specialist courses and its fully accredited and evaluated degree courses that are now adapted to the requirements of the European Higher Education Area. Its teaching and learning processes have been revised and improved and its postgraduate and continuing training courses are now well established. Teaching at the UBU is characterized by individual attention to students, the use of new technologies, and competitive advantages such as grants, support for mobility and internships for all students in companies and institutions. The virtual teaching platform and the new tutoring system are important additions to the learning experience, at the same time, the University has consolidated its international profile and, thanks to its Castilian roots, remains a particularly attractive destination for foreign students keen to learn Spanish.
Thanks to the strength of the industrial sector in the city of Burgos and its surroundings, a large number of contracts and agreements have been signed with companies to enable UBU researchers to work together with companies of all sizes. This cooperation plays an important role in promoting the countrys economic and social development. The UBU has set up internationally competitive research groups in basic and applied research areas, encouraging the acquisition of state-of-the-art scientific and technological resources, and increasing its participation in European projects and initiatives. The University currently has 67 Research Groups, 10 of which have received recognition for their excellence from the Autonomous Government of Castile-Leon. Technology transfer and R&D cooperation with the local manufacturing industry have grown considerably in recent years. Scientific productivity is also on the increase, and today UBU researchers regularly publish articles in leading international journals. In fact, 86% of UBU professors have taken part in research projects and 40% of its PhD programs have received the mención de calidad awarded by the Ministry in recognition of their quality. These achievements are due, to a large extent, to the resources that the University provides for conducting research, such as databases, publications, and the volumes in the University Library, which ranks amongst the ten best in Spain. The UBU is also a pioneer in the use of new technologies, with wi-fi connection throughout the campus and the large number of computers available for student use.
