Breve descripción:

Founded by the Church in Valencia, the Universidad Católica de Valencia “San Vicente Mártir” has established itself as a centre of academic excellence and creativity, which seeks to place knowledge at the disposal of society. It has grown out of the pioneering work carried out since the 1950s by the Edetania Foundation Group, the University School of Nursing “Nuestra Señora de los Desamparados” and the Faculty of Business Studies. The University combines its Catholic identity with the rigour of an academic community. This unique character provides students with three main benefits: advanced learning centred jointly on faith and reason, the building of a true university community in a friendly academic atmosphere, and the development of a highly personal academic relationship between tutor and student.

Historia:

The Universidad Católica de Valencia “San Vicente Mártir” was founded by the Archbishop of Valencia, Monsignor Agustín García-Gasco, on 8 December 2003, the feast of the Immaculate Conception, in the Metropolitan Cathedral of Valencia. In its founding statutes, the prelate recognized the concern shown by the Church in Valencia over the centuries for providing its Christian community and Valencian society with institutions that served to create, promote and revitalize university culture. The Church, for example, played a leading role in the founding of the University of Valencia five centuries earlier, and in that of many other university institutions. Monsignor José María García Lahiguera, Archbishop of Valencia, with the support of various religious institutions, founded the Edetania University Teacher Training School on 3 November 1969 and set up the Edetania Foundation Group, in January 1974. A few years later, in 1979, the then Archbishop of Valencia, Monsignor Miguel Roca Cabanellas and the Rector of the University of Valencia signed an agreement whereby Edetania became affiliated to the University of Valencia. This agreement remained in force until 2004. In 1999 the founding statutes were amended in order to respond to the growth experienced by Edetania, and to enable it to broaden its offer of academic courses. The Foundation signed a further affiliation agreement with the Universidad Miguel Hernández de Elche in October 2002, which included the teaching of degrees in Psychology, Psychopedagogy, Sports Sciences, Social and Cultural Anthropology and Marine Sciences, which came to form part of the Edetania Faculty of Human and Education Sciences. In February 2004 the University incorporated the University School of Nursing “Nuestra Señora de los Desamparados” and the Faculty of Business Studies and its degrees in Business Management and Administration and Business Science. In March 2007, the University created a Faculty of Medicine offering degree courses in Medicine, Dentistry, Physiotherapy and Podiatry. Today the University comprises six faculties and one university school teaching 18 degree courses.

Docencia:

The University considers the university professor to be a scholar who is able to establish a relationship with his or her students based on knowledge and wisdom, and whose teachings can transmit the very notions of learning. Instruction, education and training are the three lynchpins holding teaching together. The university professor instructs, by making a fundamental contribution to the development of the student’s personality, the university professor educates, by encouraging the student to discover and develop his or her skills and talents, and the university professor trains in a humanistic sense, by providing the student with excellent professional skills and with a clear understanding of how he can work for the greater good of mankind. The University provides students with a rigorous and personally enriching education. Its primary goal is that students acquire a rounded education in the humanities and sciences and in their specific disciplines which will have a great repercussion in the future of our society. At the same time it strives to integrate knowledge within Catholic traditions. The progress of each student is closely monitored, not only as regards their academic work but also in terms of their personal growth. It is the goal of the University that all students acquire knowledge and technical skills as they also grow personally and professionally.

Investigación:

The Universidad Católica seeks to undertake an in-depth analysis of present-day reality by applying the specific methods appropriate to each academic discipline and, thus, enrich human knowledge. Each of these disciplines is studied systematically and then the various branches of knowledge are brought together so that the insights they shed on each other can be examined. This work serves as an excellent testimony, and one that today is greatly needed, to the trust placed by the Church in the intrinsic value of science and research. Therefore, all the University’s research work must achieve the following goals: strategies to promote knowledge integration, a dialogue between faith and reason, a concern for ethics, and a theological perspective.
