The Universidad Católica San Antonio de Murcia, located in the countryside outside the capital of the region of Murcia, has as its main missions teaching, conducting research and spreading the Christian faith. The green Murcian countryside with its aroma of orange blossom and natural tranquillity constitute a unique setting for university life. The main campus of the Monasterio de Jerónimos (18th C.) rises up out of the Murcian landscape and, together with its baroque church, has been declared a historic monument.
'In his Apostolic Constitution ''Ex Corde Ecclesiae'', pronounced in August 1990, Pope John Paul II reminded bishops of their responsibility to promote Catholic universities as we entered the new millennium. At the same time he stressed the importance of the presence of Christians in academia and throughout the cultural world. The initiative taken by the San Antonio University Foundation in creating the UCAM in Murcia, therefore, is very much a response to this call and represents the first Catholic University to be promoted and founded by the laity, with the consent of the diocesan bishop and in accordance with the Holy Father´s Apostolic Constitution. The primary goal of the UCAM is to guarantee the institutional presence of Christians with an evangelical and teaching vocation in todays academic, scientific and cultural world. It seeks to be a university that responds through faith to the major problems and issues of contemporary society and one that can promote cultural, social and human progress. '
Founded on the threshold of the third millennium, the University has a clear vocation to serve the needs of society. It helps provide professionals with the necessary expertise to contribute to today´s ever-changing world and as such it is open to innovation and is forward-looking in all its endeavours. It is characterised by its willingness to introduce and employ innovative methods and technologies, which means revolutionizing the traditional practices of university education. UCAM´s mission is to educate students in the theoretical knowledge and practical skills of their specialist discipline, to strengthen their personal and social skills, while upholding a Christian presence in tertiary education, society and culture.
Since its foundation, the UCAM has shown a firm commitment to research excellence, considering it, in line with the Spanish Universities Act, an essential function, a right and duty of its academic teaching staff. The University has the staff and resources to ensure that its students can embark on a career in research, by completing in the first instance an official PhD program. The training of new researchers is essential for today´s global economy where technological innovation is necessary to increase competitiveness.

To fulfil these objectives, the UCAM runs mobility projects, a university school of modern languages, Spanish courses and intensive English courses during the summer months.
