The Universidad Católica de Ávila is founded on an educational model inspired by Christian humanism. It offers the student a rigorous education that combines culture, study and research with a high-quality academic, professional and personal education based on the values of the Christian faith. The University seeks to provide a modern, flexible education tailored to the needs of society and the modern workplace, and the intellectual interests of each student. In addition to traditional lectures, students are encouraged to take an active part in their own learning. This is achieved by way of a tutorial system that caters to individual academic needs and a student-teacher ratio that allows tutors to work with students on a one-to-one basis. The University also promotes the integration of the student within the World Heritage City of Ávila.
'The Universidad Católica ''Santa Teresa de Jesús'' de Ávila was established by the decree of the Bishop of Avila on 24 August 1996. The University, however, was formally instituted as part of the Spanish Catholic Church in August 1990, and as a civil institution as early as January 1979. In June 1998 and May 1999, the Regional Government of Castile-Leon authorised the commencement of the courses requested by the University, and in July and December 1999, all of the Universitys degrees were granted formal approval. In September 2001, the Regional Government of Castile-Leon finally authorised the opening of the Universidad Católica de Ávila. '
Teaching at the UCAV is primarily centred on subjects that offer a broad base of knowledge and a wide range of skills. The aim is to provide students with a rigorous training in their academic studies and research work as well as preparing them for a future professional career. To achieve this goal, students are encouraged to take courses from other degree programs to enable them to acquire the right specialist profile to match labour market demands. There are also opportunities for students to take part in a variety of work experience programs in public and private companies, not only in Spain but also abroad. The UCAV offers students the possibility of studying for two different degrees in parallel on its Simultaneous Degree Program and teaches a wide variety of high-quality academic courses in collaboration with leading educational and professional institutions. The University is also committed to a policy of organizing student exchange programs with European and American universities. All these activities are conducted within a framework that emphasizes The Universitys humanistic view of man and the world, and as such its educational programs are underpinned by the study of human values, training in foreign languages, developing ICT skills and an awareness of the vital role played by sustainable development.
Research at the UCAV is organised into ten research groups and covers such fields as the social and legal sciences, engineering, sustainable development and the humanities. The Universitys main research lines include: finance and public expenditure, economic analysis of labour markets, a corporate observatory, legal organisation and legislation, forest ecology, biodiversity and sustainable resource management, hydrology and soil conservation, food quality, ecology and conservation of wild fauna and flora, environmental analysis and pollution assessment, wood anatomy and bioethics. Some of these lines are directly concerned with the development of the region of Castile-Leon. Here, the receipt of public and private funding helps in transferring technology to society, while the research groups are also involved in organizing activities, such as the Science Week, at this local level. Other regional projects include monitoring: the insect population in the mountains of the Sierra de Gredos, arsenic levels in the waters of the province of Ávila, the state of the rental market in Castile-Leon, and improving bean cultivation in El Barco de Ávila. All these projects serve to train the Universitys research students introducing them to different fields of research.

The aim of the International Relations Service is to promote and manage national and international mobility projects for members of the University community, providing them with the opportunity to study, teach, train and research in partner institutions in other countries as a means of furthering the development of quality education and of promoting innovation. Existing mobility projects have strengthened the Universitys international outlook and provide a gateway to learning opportunities and job placements in different countries. Students taking part in these projects receive full academic credit at the UCAV for their studies and internships completed abroad.
