The Universidad Carlos III de Madrid (UC3M) is a public university founded in 1989, with three campuses in the outlying towns of Getafe, Leganés and Colmenarejo. Its three centres are the School of Social Science and Law (Getafe and Colmenarejo), the School of Humanities (Getafe and Colmenarejo), and the School of Engineering (Leganés and Colmenarejo).
The Universidad Carlos III de Madrid completed the adaptation of its degree programs to the European Higher Education Area for the 2008-09 academic year, and is a pioneering institution in quality teaching and academic assessment. Surveys monitoring teaching methods and quality have been carried out since 1993, and a dedicated Quality Committee analyses the development of each degree course. The Universidad Carlos III de Madrid boasts the highest proportion of teaching staff with favourable research assessments by the Ministry of Education and Science of any university in Spain. It is ranked in the top three universities in the country for research articles published in international journals (JCR), doctoral theses and research projects per member of teaching staff.
Summer Courses: School of Arts in conjunction with Círculo de Bellas Artes de Madrid. - University of the Third Age: university program for the over-55s, with the same academic rigour as graduate and undergraduate studies, and aiming to integrate students into all areas of university life. - Aula de Educación Permanente: lifelong learning courses for the over-55s. - Courses in Hispanic Studies: six-month and one-year courses for international students.
UC3M has a large number of international agreements with universities and other bodies: 380 in Europe, 20 in North America, 90 in Latin America and 2 in Asia: - Erasmus European MobilityOUT: 560 students (2008-09) 416 students (2008-09). - Mobility through exchange programs with America, Australia and Singapore: 66 students (2008-09) 392 students (2008-09).
Libraries: UC3M has four libraries with a fully automated centralized catalogue. - Information and Communication Technology: 48 computer rooms with 1,020 machines spread across the three campuses. - Laboratories, studios, film sets and a court room: the School of Engineering has a number of laboratories and training workshops, fitted with the cutting edge technological infrastructures and advanced equipment. It also has TV/film sets, editing suites, radio studios and a court room. - Language laboratory: a self-learning service with resources in English, French and German, where students can work at their own pace. - Sports facilities and activities: the University has two multi-purpose sports complexes with outdoor sports pitches, tennis and squash courts, a heated indoor swimming pool, fitness rooms, saunas, a beach volley-ball court, a climbing wall and a multi-purpose activity room. - Auditorium and cultural activities: located on the Leganés Campus, the auditorium seats 1,000 people and puts on around 50 shows a year. The University also runs a varied program of cultural activities and encourages participation in its drama, dance and music groups. - Careers Guidance and Planning Service (SOPP): manages a database of job vacancies and offers personalized advice on a range of academic and employment matters.
