Founded on the principles of freedom and independence, the Universidad Alfonso X el Sabio (UAX) provides its students with the knowledge and skills they need in order to pursue fulfilling and successful careers in the business world. Combining a traditional humanistic approach to teaching and learning with a firm commitment to the use of the new technologies, the UAX provides an education of the highest quality thanks to the concerted efforts of its academic staff and the excellence of its facilities. At the UAX education and personal development come together, through the active presence of students and teaching staff on a campus equipped with all the services for academic life. Situated in the town of Villanueva de la Cañada, some 25 kilometres from Madrid, the campus is a modern, functional complex with grounds of over 1 million square metres which provides an ideal environment for students to enjoy all aspects of university life: studying, research, social and cultural events, and sport.

The Universidad Alfonso X el Sabio was founded by Act of Parliament in 1993, and began its academic activities in 1994-95.

Ever since its creation, the Universidad Alfonso X El Sabio Foundation (FUAX) has pursued its mission of furthering scientific and educational activities of social interest. During this time, the foundation has given financial and administrative assistance to the University’s research teams and has actively promoted research mobility. It has also provided funding for lecturers to attend seminars, congresses, and summer courses, and for the publication of books and teaching materials. As these activities have expanded, the University has signed numerous research projects with private companies in the technology and health sciences. Two examples are the SACYR-CIMBRA and SACYR-RAP projects, commissioned by the leading Spanish construction firm Sacyr-Vallehermoso.

International relations play a fundamental role in the modern world. Knowledge of languages is an essential tool in the development of these relations. The UAX runs a variety of mobility and exchange projects that give its students first-hand experience of international environment.

At the UAX, education and personal development come together through the active presence of students and teaching staff on a campus equipped with all the services needed for academic life. The University Library is housed in a purpose-built building and its long opening hours enable students to study when it most suits them. The University has placed its faith in the technological future by providing computer rooms for all students to do their coursework and to search for information on the Internet. The UAX also has top level sports facilities: an artificial grass football pitch, facilities for track and field events officially approved for international competitions, tennis and racket sport courts, tatami mats for judo and martial arts, a 800 sq.m. gymnasium and a sports hall where indoor football, basketball, handball and volleyball are played. The campus has three halls of residence, a dining-hall and a cafeteria.

In keeping with its philosophy as a business university, the UAX is determined to deliver excellent service. The University’s quality management system, which covers all its structures, services, and degree courses, complies with ISO 9000 standards and is designed to meet the needs and expectations of students and their families. This project has been officially acknowledged by AENOR, the Spanish Association for Standardization and Certification, which has awarded the UAX a company certificate in compliance with ISO 9001 standards. The University is also authorized to use the Madrid Excelente label, awarded by the Autonomous Community of Madrid to leading companies that demonstrate their commitment to excellence, quality, innovation, and ongoing improvement. The UAX thus joined the select group of institutions with this quality seal, and in fact won the Madrid Excelente Prize for Customer Confidence in 2007.
