The Universidad Nacional de Educación a Distancia (UNED) is the only public university in the state that teaches all its courses by e-learning while offering students the possibility of attending tutorials.
The UNED was founded by decree in August 1972. The aim was to bring higher education to Spains smaller towns and villages which had no access to the university education offered in the cities. The setting up of regional centres helped consolidate the UNED and its teaching throughout the Spanish peninsula and islands. More recently the UNED has expanded and built an international structure by opening centres in various cities throughout Europe, Africa and America. Today, the UNED is one of Spains greatest institutions and the countrys largest university with more than 200,000 students. It teaches 27 degree programs, more than 500 continuing education courses, a range of language courses at the Distance Learning University Language Centre, more than 400 university outreach courses, and the university admission course for those over the age of 25 and the program for those over the age of 55, UNED Sénior.
The UNED has an academic teaching staff of more than 1,300 members working in nine Faculties, at its two Technical Schools and on the Universitys admission course for those over the age of 25 (known as CAD) based at its headquarters in Madrid. The University also employs more than 6,900 tutors in its Associated Centres. The University is a pioneer in the application of learning technologies and has the largest offer of virtual courses in the country. It employs a methodology based on the principles of distance learning an e-learning methodology focused on students needs. It can also call on a wide range of resources to support its work: a Student Adaptation Program, a virtual bookshop, library, and on-site tutorials.
UNEDs research work is carried out via the Research and PhD Studies Commission which draws up specific directives in coordinating this work. These include objective criteria for financing the Research Groups, as well as advising on contracts and agreements related with their research work. Among the specific units responsible for undertaking and managing research at the UNED specific mention should be made of the Research Institutes, the University Departments, the Research Groups, the Research Management Department, the Office for the Transfer of Research Findings, the Technical Office for Research Support and the Library.
The UNEDs other services include a range of cultural activities such as the Short Story Prize, the UNEDs Choir and Reading Club, sporting activities such as the Rectors Cross Country Race, the University Outreach Courses, and the Distance Learning University Language Centre (CUID), which teaches courses in 12 languages.
The UNED seeks to build on its international standing by participating principally in projects in the European Union and Latin America. It promotes participation in knowledge exchange around the world and encourages mobility and university exchange programs.
The 11 Faculties, Central Library and centralized services are housed in the Ciudad Universitaria in Madrid. The UNED operates in each of the regions of Spain through its 61 Associated Centres with more than 100 additional classrooms, in which it runs tutorials and where students can sit the examinations set by the teaching teams. The Centres are also equipped with tutorial rooms, computer labs, libraries and research laboratories. The UNED has a presence in 11 countries in Europe, America and Africa through 12 Associated Centres abroad and 4 affiliate examination centres. UNED programs are broadcast on La 2 and Canal 24 Horas, two of Spains national television channels and on national radio.
