Short description:
Mondragon Unibertsitatea, founded as a non-profit, public utility, has a marked social orientation and vocation. Since its creation, the University has been committed to providing education of excellence and courses with a clear practical orientation. At Mondragon great importance is attached to providing students with a rigorous, well-rounded education. Through its association with the Mondragón Co-operative Corporation the University is able to maintain close lies with the business world, enabling students to gain experience of the workplace even as they begin their degree studies. The University currently has around 4,000 students and offers 22 bachelors degrees, 15 masters and eight specialist courses in higher education.
History:
Mondragon Unibertsitatea is a relatively new university, being officially established in May 1997. The University was formed from the merging of three educational cooperatives, which boasted many years of experience in education, Mondragon Goi Eskola Politeknikoa Jose Mª Arizmendiarrieta S.Coop., ETEO S.Coop. and Irakasle Eskola S.Coop. Today these three institutions form the Universitys Polytechnic School, the Business Faculty and the Faculty of Humanities and Education, respectively
Docencia:
Research:
R&D activity at Mondragon Unibertsitatea not only focuses on generating new knowledge, but also on applying it in a range of specialist fields. The Universitys researchers are concerned with providing training on the degree courses they teach while developing innovative services for organisations outside the University. All the research is conducted by the Universitys research teams which bring together researchers with a common vision of how to develop their work and transfer its results to society. The main principles underlying their work are: the establishment of strong links between R&D, training and innovation, the strengthening of the collaborative model of research, and a general alignment with broader scientific, technological and social plans.
University Extension:
Each Faculty organizes a broad range of cultural activities (conferences, workshops, roundtables, etc.) and a wide variety of sports and leisure activities. Most of the Universitys facilities are located in the district of Alto Deba, in the heart of the Basque Country. This unrivalled location provides students with many leisure options as the three regional capitals of the Basque Country are less than an hour´s drive from Mondragon.
International Relations:
Mondragon Unibertsitatea firmly believes that strong international links can enhance the quality of its study and research programs, as well as broadening and enriching students´ horizons. For these reasons, MU is actively involved in a range of European programs including the mobility projects of Socrates, Erasmus, Lingua and Comenius, systems guaranteeing the recognition of studies carried out at foreign universities (European Credit Transfer System or ECTS), business internships (Leonardo) and cooperation programs with Eastern Europe (Tempus) and Latin America (Alpha). It also takes part in research initiatives organized by the European Union.
Facilities and services:
Mondragon Unibertsitatea provides a range of services and facilities to help make life as easy as possible for students during their time at the University. It runs two halls of residence, where students can live while they are studying, or if they prefer students can rent flats in areas near the campuses through the MU letting service. Students and academic staff can find great value meals and refreshments in the canteens and cafeterias in each Faculty and University School. And to avoid having to use their own means of transport, bus services connect the Universitys faculties and schools. At MU we understand that university life is not confined to the classroom, so we run a comprehensive sports service where students can enjoy a variety of sports in their leisure time. Finally, the MU Library service is available on all three campuses and is equipped with a wireless network, 457 study points, rooms for working individually or in teams, scanners, photocopiers, printers and audiovisual equipment.
Distinguishing features:
MU has managed to establish close links with Spanish business in an ongoing relationship that ensures its courses reflect the ever-changing needs of society and the workplace. The University prides itself on its democratic principles which means that the voices of students, academic teaching staff and local companies are all heard. Likewise, representatives of all groups form part of the Mondragon Corporation, which incorporates more than 260 companies and firms.
