Short description:

The Instituto de Empresa (IE) University represents an extension into graduate and postgraduate education of its international education model, designed to help promote the European Higher Education Area. IE University has a clear international outlook and an approach that integrates business management training with a humanistic spirit in all its programs. IE University offers undergraduate and postgraduate courses in English and Spanish that can be studied in blended learning formats, linking state of the art online methodologies and face-to-face study.

History:

IE is an institution of higher education which, for more than 30 years, has been training leaders that promote innovation and change in business organizations, and entrepreneurs that create employment opportunities, wealth and social welfare. The Instituto de Empresa teaches bachelor’s and master’s degree courses, PhD programs and business programs for managers and firms. The IE is ranked among the best five business schools in Europe and the top 15 in the world by respected newspapers and journals that include the Financial Times, The Economist and The Wall Street Journal. The private university has transferred the teaching model used at the IE Business School to its classrooms and, in this way, it has brought a humanistic approach to higher education that promotes innovation and personal initiative, but which above all is eminently practical. IE University has its main campus in the former convent of Santa Cruz la Real de Segovia (declared a historic monument in 1931). Here students have access to classrooms, workshops, drawing workshops, laboratories, radio and television studios, conference rooms and common rooms where the latest technology has been integrated into buildings that date back to the fifteenth century. The University’s hall of residence, Reyes Católicos, is also on campus and ensures that students who are not resident in Segovia adapt fully to university life.

Docencia:

At IE University students not only acquire the skills specific to their own field of knowledge, but they also develop their intellectual autonomy, an interest in learning and a sense of social responsibility. IE University provides a system of personalised tutorials, exchange programs and joint research projects with universities from around the world. It also organizes professional job placements in firms thanks to more than 780 cooperation agreements that guarantee a high percentage of the University’s graduates find employment on graduating. - Highly personalized teaching, with an average student-teacher ratio of just eight to one and thirty students per class. - Career guidance. Students receive support through individual interviews and a close monitoring of their progress in all aspects of their development: grants, specialist courses and postgraduate programs, trips and other extracurricular activities, and in particular work experience placements. - The University runs an active careers and employment centre and an international network made up of its former students.

Research:

IE University sets itself the goal of promoting progress, innovation and development in the sciences, technology and culture in general while providing teaching excellence at all levels. The Vice-Rector for Research also seeks to study, defend and preserve the cultural and natural heritage, promote the quality of life and social welfare, and support the arts and the dissemination of culture.

University Extension:

IE University gives priority to activities that bring students together and help create a sense of community: seminars, talks, debates and the IE Clubs, which are a range of recreational and intellectual discussion groups organized in many different fields. The University also encourages language learning and sport. The IE University’s extracurricular activities are open to students from all disciplines and they have a marked international flavour, since it is the University’s aim to give students a global outlook and to broaden their cultural interests. The IE University helps its students to think outside the box and to see things from a different perspective. The Student Office acts as a meeting point for all students and is a place where they can obtain the personal support they might need. It also acts as an information point, providing students with the practical means to enjoy the IE University experience to the full. The main objective of the Language Centre is to ensure that the University’s students enter the professional job market with the language skills needed to perform their work efficiently. In response to the growing importance attached to languages in European higher education following the signing of the Bologna accord, the IE University’s Language Centre provides students with a range of language learning and support programs in Spanish and English. In addition students can enrol on classes in two other languages – namely, Mandarin Chinese and Modern Standard Arabic, which should open up new and interesting horizons for them in the future. IE University organizes a broad range of exhibitions, concerts, poetry recitals, film showings, etc. Sporting activities are also encouraged including ski trips to the Alps, cycling in Holland and rafting in the Pyrenees. The Department of Extracurricular Activities, together with the Schools of Biology and the Arts, organizes field trips to give students insights into the region’s rich natural and artistic heritage.
