Short description:

The Universidad de Córdoba (UCO) was granted charted in 1972 and combines the dynamism of a young and expanding university with the academic rigour and teaching excellence of an established institution. The UCO has a student population of 15,500, as well as 1,400 teaching staff and 700 administrative and services personnel. This room for growth has given the University the dynamism to adapt to the 21-Century demand for teaching excellence and proven scientific expertise.

History:

Although founded in its current form in 1972, the history of the Universidad de Córdoba dates back almost two hundred years to the Universidad Libre, which was active in the province in the late 19th Century. Some of the original subjects taught at the Universidad Libre are still offered at the UCO today, most notably veterinary science, which is the only degree program of its type in Andalusia.

Docencia:

Teaching at the UCO is divided into three broad areas: the humanities and legal and social sciences, health sciences, and science and technology. Courses in these areas are, in turn, taught on three different campuses: the Humanities and Legal and Social Sciences Campus in the city centre, the Health Sciences Campus in the western part of the city, and Food and Agricultural Sciences alongside Science and Technology at the Rabanales Campus, to the east of the city. The University also has a Technical School located 60 kilometres from the city in the town of Belmez. The Rabanales Campus epitomises the modernization that has become a hallmark of the University. The combination of advanced teaching and research infrastructures and a range of additional student and staff services makes the campus one of the most outstanding academic complexes in Andalusia.

Research:

According to data taken from the latest Andalusia Research Plan (PAI), the University of Cordoba currently operates 165 research groups with over a thousand scientists. The research groups at the University of Cordoba work in nine distinct fields: food and agriculture, life and health sciences, social sciences, economic and legal sciences, physics, chemistry and mathematics, the humanities, environmental sciences, information and communication technologies, and production technology. Researchers are also involved in a range of programs with local organizations and companies throughout the year. Work in this area is overseen by the Office for the Transfer of Research Findings (OTRI), which acts as a liaison between researchers and companies with specific technological requirements. Scientific activity at the UCO is supported by the Central Office for Research Support (SCAI) and the Animal Experimentation Service.

University Extension:

The Universidad de Córdoba strives to be more than a mere academic institution, and aims to create an environment for critical thought, reflection and social development, which draws on the individual development of each member of the university community. The University Chairs and Workshop programs offer a range of academic and cultural activities that reflect the interests and requirements of the local community.

International Relations:

The International Relations Office is responsible for managing the University´s external relations and promoting cooperative work between university bodies and other institutions. The Office has a range of functions, and aims to develop and strengthen the University´s international relations, further student training, consolidate existing relationships and exchange agreements with national and international organizations in the areas of culture, science, training and development, extend the range of teaching and research activities of its staff, contribute to the academic, social and cultural projection of the University internationally, and promote projects that will open new channels of activity.

Facilities and services:

The UCO is spread across the Rabanales Campus, the Health Sciences Campus and the Humanities and Legal and Social Sciences Campus. The University also runs a Technical School in the town of Belmez, 60 kilometres from Córdoba. Rabanales Campus The Rabanales Campus, located three kilometres outside the city centre, houses modern facilities with the latest technology, making the UCO one of the best equipped universities in Europe. In additional to departmental buildings, there are lecture halls, a veterinary hospital and the Juan XXIII Auditorium, whose tower offers panoramic views of the site. The Central Library, modern sports facilities, the Lucano hall of residence and a train station complete the list of general services available on the campus, in addition to an R&D Technology Park which is currently under construction. The Veterinary Science Faculty, the Science Faculty, the Technical School and the School of Agricultural and Forestry Engineering (ETSIAM) are all located on the Rabanales Campus. Health Sciences Campus The Health Sciences Campus is located near the Reina Sofía University Hospital and is home to the School of Nursing and the Faculty of Medicine. Although affiliated to the Humanities Campus, the Faculty of Education Sciences is also located on this site. It is equipped with a library offering spacious reading areas and specialized computer rooms, and a range of state-of-the-art audiovisual technologies. Humanities and Legal and Social Sciences Campus Several other sites belonging to the Universidad de Córdoba can be found throughout the city. The modern building that houses the Faculty of Labour Sciences is located next to the Malmuerta Tower, and provides a unique contrast with the historical value and architectural splendour of the Faculties of Law, Philosophy and Arts. Chancellor´s Office The Chancellor´s Office occupies the former home of the Faculty of Veterinary Science, a beautiful neo-Mudejar building on the Avenida de Medina Azahara considered one of the most emblematic buildings in Córdoba. The building has been extensively refurbished and modernized to house central university facilities and a range of other services. Belmez The Belmez Technical School was founded in 1924 and has been affiliated to the Universidad de Córdoba since 1973. The School´s location in the coal mining region of Peñarroya-Pueblonuevo reflects its origins as a School of Mines. The School now offers an extensive range of courses and has become a driving force behind development in the area, and continued growth has seen it open a hall of residence for students and several new teaching rooms and research laboratories. Accommodation Service The Universidad de Córdoba currently offers a wide range of accommodation services which are either operated directly by the University or managed under common agreement with other institutions. Library The University Library services are based on the Rabanales Campus. The extensive collection also includes a range of audiovisual materials and manuscripts. Students have access to all standard services, including loans, a reference section, reading rooms and a range of consultation options including traditional card catalogues, the on-line catalogue (OPRC) and electronic databases. Additional University Library facilities are available at each of the UCO sites. IT Service The IT Service offers assistance at the computer rooms across all of the UCO campuses. Sports The University´s large, modern sports facilities are divided between the Menéndez Pidal and Rabanales Campuses, providing students and staff with the opportunity to practise a wide range of sports and other recreational activities. Facilities for students with special requirements The Office of the Vice Chancellor of Student Affairs has established a series of agreements with the Department of Social Affairs and the Ministry of Employment and Social Affairs to offer students with disabilities an adapted transport service (operated by the Provincial Federation of Associations for the Physically Disabled, Fepamic) and a sign language interpreting services. Student Services The Student Information Office provides comprehensive information on admission to the University, the enrolment process and general academic life. It also provides specific details on the degrees, diplomas and other training options offered at the UCO. The Universidad de Córdoba runs a Mental Health Service, which is based on the Faculty of Education Sciences. Modern Languages and Translation Service Through UCO Idiomas, the Universidad de Córdoba offers a wide range of courses in English, French, German, Italian, Arabic and Spanish as a Foreign Language, as well as general and specialized translation services. Office of Publications The UCO Office of Publications is involved primarily in the publication of research studies carried out at the University, as well as managing, distributing and exchanging scientific knowledge with other Spanish, European and American universities. To date, the Office of Publications has a total collection of some 1000 works.

Distinguishing features:

The Universidad de Córdoba is at the forefront of research in Andalusia and is one of the leading research institutions in Spain. Teaching and research are the cornerstones of all activity at the UCO, and the two areas are united by a shared concern for quality.
