The Universidad CEU Cardenal Herrera forms part of the San Pablo-CEU University Foundation, which is responsible for the work undertaken by the Catholic Association of Propagandists in the field of education. The University is a Christian-inspired institution and shares the ideology of the Catholic Association of Propagandists and the teachings of the Magisterium of the Catholic Church. It seeks to ensure that lecturers and students alike receive a rigorous training in critical thinking and that they are prepared to carry out scientific and professional activities for the betterment of society. The Universitys mission is also to promote academic research and to serve as a channel for the dissemination of culture and the Christian values that it holds.
The Universidad CEU Cardenal Herrera was established by the Valencian Parliament in December 1999, although the San Pablo-CEU University Foundation has been teaching in Valencia since the 1971-72 academic year. In the year 2000 it began teaching university courses as an affiliated centre. Since then, the growth of its academic activity has enabled it to establish itself as the first privately run university in the Valencia Region. In the 1994-95 academic year courses were also offered in the small city of Elche (Alicante). In 2007, the University opened a School of Nursing in Castellón, within that citys hospital consortium.
The University is a member of the Program for Academic Excellence and the Organization of Knowledge (Plato Program) that the San Pablo-CEU University Foundation launched in conjunction with Harvard University. The program aims to adopt the educational system of this US university, which places the emphasis on learning and plans its teaching around student needs. These are precisely the teaching characteristics that will be introduced in the European Higher Education Area (EHEA). The Plato Program involves the introduction of a tutorial system to complement course teaching and a system of continuous evaluation. This means that students must pass between 30 and 50% of their first year credits (depending on the course) in order to continue with their chosen degree. A further feature of the teaching at the University is that elective subjects in all disciplines form part of a comprehensive project of humanistic training and are taught by the Angel Ayala CEU Institute of Humanities. All these subjects provide training in the humanities and include: language, literature, history, art, philosophy, natural sciences, the Churchs social doctrine, etc. The students education is completed with language training. The Universitys Language Service offers free English classes to all students, who must pass a language test before being allowed to enter the second cycle of their degree course. As for student grants, last year more than 725 students received financial assistance for their studies at the University. These included 533 grants from the Ministry of Education and 155 scholarships awarded by the San Pablo-CEU University Foundation.
The University is currently engaged in joint research projects with several state ministries and various departments of the Valencian Government. These projects include research lines examining the neural effects of drug and alcohol consumption, diseases such as leukaemia and diabetes, drug design and media on the internet. The University runs three research institutes: the IDYCA (Institute of Drugs and Addictive Behaviour), the IDIT (Institute of Design, Innovation and Technology) and IDEA (Institute of Environmental Law and Ethics). The University also offers eight PhD programs, on which there are currently 160 students enrolled. Eleven PhD theses were defended at the CEU Cardenal Herrera last year.
The Vice-Rector for Students and Institutional Relations manages the following student services: Student counselling, Languages, Pastoral Care, Sports Service, Careers Information and Internships, Unit for International Mobility Programs, Internship unit, Careers Services, Alumni association, Solidarity chair. It also coordinates the cultural activities of the Cardenal Herrera CEU University choir and theatre group and arranges conferences, exhibitions and cultural activities for students.
The International Relations Service has organized 27 exchanges for academic teaching staff and 12 for administrative and services personnel. The University has welcomed 160 students from abroad while 92 CEU students have enjoyed exchange programs in foreign universities. A further 26 students have been sent on international internships.
The University has its own facilities to ensure students receive the practical training they require. They include the Centre for Audiovisual and Multimedia Production, which is equipped with television, radio and photography studios, the Veterinary Hospital, the leader in its field in the Valencian Community, the Zoological Teaching Centre, a farm which stocks various farm animals, the University Dental Clinic, providing outpatient care, and laboratories for carrying out basic biomedical and clinical simulations in the health sciences. It also has a Central Library, with a capacity for 700 readers and over 100,000 volumes.
