Short description:

Ever since its creation, the Universidad Nebrija has pioneered a new concept of what a university should be: on the one hand, innovative and responsive to students’ interests and concerns, and on the other, efficient and accessible, with a distinctive, modern teaching methodology adapted to the new European Higher Education Area (EHEA). The University’s commitment to providing quality is reflected in its holistic approach to study that enhances its students’ personal and professional development and prepares them for successful careers in today’s plural, complex and globalized society.

History:

When the new legislation allowing the creation of private universities was passed in the late 1980s, a group of teachers and academics decided to build on the experience of the Antonio de Nebrija Centre for Hispanic Studies to create a competitive, dynamic, private institution offering the best of the university and business worlds. Nebrija University was officially recognized by the Spanish Parliament in 1995. With its extensive teaching experience, its mission today is to offer excellence in teaching and scientific research in all its areas of expertise, to train skilled graduates and enhance their personal development, and to contribute to social progress. It is an independent university which has a strong international profile but is also firmly rooted in its social and economic environment. Nebrija has 3,000 students studying for degrees at the Polytechnical School, the School of Architecture, the Faculties of Social Sciences, Communication Sciences and Arts and Letters, and the Nebrija Business School for postgraduates.

Docencia:

Nebrija is based on the principle that personal and professional training involves more than just the transmission of knowledge. In order to pursue successful careers, graduates must develop skills in teamwork and leadership, they must transmit optimism, promote and respond to change, and learn to negotiate. Equipping its graduates with these key professional skills is a priority for the University: to do so, it organizes internships in companies, foreign language courses and courses in other specialist areas. Nebrija bridges the gap between academia and the business world and prepares its graduates for the professional environment. At Nebrija, academic learning is based on close, constant interaction between teachers and students. The University’s admissions process makes it possible to channel students according to their abilities, and the personalized focus of the teaching strengthens the figure of the tutor and the systems of continuous assessment. Degree courses at Nebrija combine basic training, specialization, practical guidance and a fully international outlook.

Research:

Nebrija places special emphasis on applied research and on transferring its results to the rest of society and the business world. It also carries out important theoretical research able to generate new knowledge. Research activity and teaching practice are very often combined in the form of sponsorship agreement programs, such as the master’s programs sponsored by Viajes El Corte Inglés, Grupo Santander, Telefónica, IBM, Grupo BLC, Iberdrola and Landwell-PricewaterhouseCoopers, Tapsa and IAA, and research or educational projects in cooperation with leading companies and institutions such as Grupo Santander, Fundación Santa María, Fundación Dragados, Fundación ICO, LOGICA and Grupo BLC.

Regardless of their level at the time of admission, Nebrija students achieve a mastery of English on the courses run by the Institute of Modern Languages. Numerous cooperation agreements with leading foreign universities have established Nebrija as the Spanish university with the largest percentage of incoming foreign students on its campuses. The University also has a wide range of international programs that enable students to spend one or two semesters at major universities in Europe, the US, Canada and Latin America, a rewarding learning experience that opens up many professional opportunities.

Facilities and services:

Nebrija Business Relations All our students find work immediately on completing their studies, in fact 70% find their first job through their company internship. Virtual Campus Library This new system connects the library with the University network through the Students and Teaching Staff Services. Its advanced technology has established it as a major promotional tool supporting the documentary needs of the entire University community and enhancing Nebrija’s academic reputation inside the knowledge management framework.

Distinguishing features:

Nebrija is a leader in educational innovation and internationalization and promotes an educational model based on the students’ own learning processes. The combination of different methodological approaches incorporating theoretical discussion and individual study helps its students to develop practical and interpersonal skills, the ability to think critically, and the ability to work in a group. All aspects of the university experience are designed to promote excellence: group size, practical classes, language training, computer labs, Internet, and mandatory internships in companies. The manageable size of the University ensures that students receive individual attention and provides an ideal environment for their academic and professional development. Nebrija’s international dimension is another asset. The percentage of foreign students on its campus is the highest in Spain, and many of its students study part of their degree abroad. The University’s concern with practical training, professional development and familiarization with new technologies is reflected by the presence of compulsory professional internships in all its degrees. These internships supplement graduates’ training and allow them to acquire the knowledge, skills and attitudes needed in a professional environment. Professional skills are also developed in the University’s practical workshops, where students acquire theoretical knowledge and later apply it using Nebrija’s “Learning in Action” teaching method.
