Opening a bank account in Spain

To open a bank account in Spain, whatever your nationality, you must provide evidence of your status as resident or non-resident.

If you are resident, you must present your NIE to be able to open the account.

If you are non-resident, there are two options.
  1. Ask for a non-resident certificate at your local police station and present it at the bank along with your passport.
  2. Go to the bank with your passport. In this case, the bank will ask you to sign an authorization to allow them to process your non-resident certificate. The bank will charge around 15€ for this service. The bank account will not be operative until the branch has the certificate.
